Teen jailed after killing youngster in hit-and-run
Staffordshire PoliceA 17-year-old boy has been jailed for more than six years after a teenager was killed in a hit-and-run.
Harley Hough was driving over the 30mph speed limit on Dawlish Drive, Stoke-on-Trent, on 17 October when he overtook another car and struck Alex Woodward, who was crossing the road.
Woodward, also 17, was taken to hospital but died the next morning. Hough, of Longton, who can be publicly named after reporting restrictions were lifted by the judge, did not stop at the scene but handed himself in two days later and admitted he was the one driving the vehicle.
He was sentenced to six and a half years in a young offenders' institute at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Tuesday.
He had previously pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
Hough also admitted failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
FamilyDet Sgt Christopher Wright said it had been a "particularly distressing" case for Woodward's family.
"I hope the conclusion of the court process gives them a sense of closure as they continue to deal with their irreplaceable loss," he added.
Hough was also disqualified from driving for eight years during Tuesday's hearing.
