Dangerous driver caught by own dashcam suspended

A man who claimed to have been the victim of a hit-and-run has been suspended from driving after footage from his own dashcam showed him driving at 130mph.

Robin Cull, 47, of Woking, Surrey, had told police that a car had driven at his vehicle in Guildford in March, resulting in him breaking his leg.

But upon inspecting his vehicle's dashcam, officers found evidence of him driving erratically across the county, including at speeds of up to 130mph on the A3.

Appearing at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday, Cull pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced to five months in prison, suspended for 18 months.

He had his driving licence suspended for five years and will face an extended re-test once his suspension is lifted.

Cull will also have to pay more than £1,000 in costs and undergo 180 hours of unpaid work.

In March, officers had been investigating a report of an assault, with Cull alleging he had been injured in a road rage incident involving a black VW Golf in Woking Road, Guildford.

When they collected his dashcam, they found evidence of Cull repeatedly tailgating the Golf, along with footage of him overtaking the car at speed before pulling in front and reducing his speed to as low as 10mph, stopping traffic as a result.

Cull could also be seen to exit his vehicle, at which point the Golf driver attempted to pull away, resulting in a crash between the two vehicles.

Following an extensive review by Surrey Police, no further action was taken against the driver of the Golf, but Cull was subsequently arrested.

The court heard that officers had been "astounded" at Cull's recklessness.

Pat Nixon, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: "Cull's treacherous manner of driving showed a clear disregard for any rules or safety measures on our roads, and a lack of care for any other drivers across our county."
