Once the closure is lifted on Monday, motorists will be able to use a new part of the A47 to take them in and out of the city

Work to upgrade a section of the A47 in Norfolk into a dual carriageway will mean closures over the weekend.

Work is being carried out to build the new 5.5-mile (8.9km) dual carriageway between North Tuddenham and Easton, completing the dualling of the stretch between Norwich and Dereham.

The full closure affects the road from the Dereham interchange to Easton roundabout between 20:00 BST on Friday and 06:00 on Monday.

Once the road reopens, National Highways said motorists would be able to drive on the new Wood Lane Junction between Sandy Lane at Hockering and the Honingham roundabout.

Additionally, National Highways said Church Lane South, also known as Dereham Road in Easton, would be closed from the junction with the A47 to the junction with Dereham Road.

However, it said Church Lane North to Ringland would remain open.

It said residents living directly on the A47 would be escorted through the closure and emergency services would still have access to the road.

The closure also coincides with the Norwich City match against Swansea at Carrow Road at 15:00 on Saturday.

Diversions will be in place over the weekend with motorists able to travel via Thetford or Swaffham.

National Highways expect the work will help with road safety and congestion on the busy stretch of road

Work for the scheme began in October and it is hoped the upgrade will be completed and open to traffic by spring 2027.

National Highways insists the improvements will help with road safety, reduce congestion and make journey times more reliable and help the road cope better with incidents including collisions and breakdowns.

At the end of April, a further closure is expected at Lyng Road in North Tuddenham between Hall Lane and Stone Road from 06:00 on 27 April to 06:00 1 June.
