Leaders Glasgow City needed a freak goal from Natalia Wrobel nine minutes from time to deny Celtic victory and retain their unbeaten record in this season's Scottish Women's Premier League.

But their lead at the top of the table is now down to four points after Heart of Midlothian's 4-1 victory away to Partick Thistle, with Celtic now three behind the Edinburgh side in third.

Wrobel had the clearest sight at goal in a cagey first half of few chances, but the midfielder sliced her shot wide from just inside the penalty box.

City had slightly edged the opening 45 minutes, but Celtic started the second half the brighter as the visitors looked satisfied to protect a point.

Emma Lawton had already been denied by a good block from City goalkeeper Lee Gibson by the time half-time substitute Saoirse Noonan rose to head powerfully home a cross from the right-back after 56 minutes.

The Republic of Ireland striker's 14th goal of season, and 50th overall for Celtic, stung City out of their cautiousness.

Striker Emily Whelen and Wrobel were both denied by Lisa Rodgers before the goalkeeper and defender Claire Walsh both hesitated going for the Polish midfielder's cross and the ball bounced between them into the net.
