Charlie Kelman celebrates scoring his equalising penalty for Charlton

Charlie Kelman converted a 93rd-minute penalty for Charlton Athletic as Oxford United lost two precious points in the Championship relegation fight.

Oxford were just minutes away from recording their fourth straight win and pulling three points clear of the drop zone when Ciaron Brown pulled back Lloyd Jones to give away the spot-kick.

The incident mirrored Oxford's goal when Kayne Ramsay needlessly barged over Will Lankshear to concede a penalty, which was scored by Oxford's Cameron Brannagan.

Although the draw lifted Oxford out of the relegation zone, they slipped back into the bottom three come 5pm and they are now a point from safety.

Charlton's attack was blunted by losing striker Lyndon Dykes to illness just before kick-off and he was replaced by Miles Leaburn.

The first half was uneventful at the Kassam Stadium with Jamie Donley, who scored Oxford's winner at Blackburn in midweek, firing a free-kick over the bar in the only effort on goal from either side.

The game improved after the break and home defender Michal Helik lifted his right-footed effort over the outrushing Will Mannion and the goal.

Then came Ramsay's moment of madness with no need to barge over Lankshear as Sam Long's ball sailed through to Mannion.

Lankshear went down, the referee pointed to the spot and Brannagan slotted home the 57th-minute penalty into the bottom left corner for his fifth goal of the season.

Now the game opened up and Jones showed real coolness to clear off the line from Lankshear after Mannion had got a hand to slow down his shot.

Charlton were still offering little in attack before Brown threw them a lifeline in added time when he pulled back Jones inside the box.

Up stepped Kelman to fire home his sixth goal of the season and leave Oxford feeling gutted.

'Really disappointing' - Oxford reaction

Oxford United manager Matt Bloomfield told BBC Radio Oxford:

"Really disappointing to not be walking away with three points.

"We've waited so long to get a penalty and then we give one away on the same day so we're really disappointed with that.

"But I think we need to stay on an even keel, 10 points from the last four games is obviously a really good return from where we were, so we have to take the positives from that and move on quickly.

"They're [the players] are giving us everything they've got and they've been going consistently for the last few weeks.

"It's an opportunity to refresh in midweek and we go again next Saturday."

'Everything I didn't want' - Charlton reaction

Charlton boss Nathan Jones told BBC Radio London:

"It's been an outstanding week. I mean, seven points from the week has been truly, truly outstanding.

"Today's performance was everything I didn't want because we said, they sit in, they don't press you, they sit in, and they've done West Brom and Blackburn here. It's obligatory, apparently, in the Championship, that you have to be a nice, passive footballing team.

"I didn't want us to do that and for about 70-odd minutes, we were a passive, typical bang-average Championship team. Then as soon as we started playing with any tempo and putting it on them and turning them and stretching them, we could have scored two or three.

"Finally we got our goal, so I'm pleased we got the point. But they have to listen. They have to listen to what we say."
