International breaks are rarely popular with fans, especially if you're in the race for the play-offs or (whisper it) the automatic promotion places…

But in truth, Millwall will regard this weekend's pause in the Championship action as a welcome chance to get a number of players out of the medical room and nearer to first-team action.

As we approach the final seven games of what has been a remarkable 2025-26 campaign, the Lions sit in fourth spot behind Ipswich and Middlesbrough, with just two points separating them - although the Tractor Boys hold what may prove to be a critical game in hand on their two rivals.

From the Millwall perspective, the trip to the Riverside Stadium is looking more and more like a pivotal moment in the season.

Can the Lions pull off a historic achievement and steal that second place?

They'll need to win at Boro - and keep winning to the final match.

A big ask as they say.

So it is going to be a titanic match at Middlesbrough on Good Friday.

If the Lions can stay healthy, allowing head coach Alex Neil to pick his strongest XI, there is every reason for optimism at The Den.

  2. Neil impressed by Millwall's lack of fearpublished at 18:34 GMT 21 March

Alex Neil's side remain level on points with third-placed Ipswich and are still just two points adrift of Middlesbrough, who are second

Millwall boss Alex Neil said his side fully merited the point they earned after coming back from a goal down to draw 1-1 with fellow promotion chasers Ipswich Town.

"In the first half they were the better side," Neil told BBC London. "We still pressed the ball the same way we normally do but they moved it really well and were threatening.

"We didn't have loads to do but the pressure was building and it was evident they were moving the ball better than us.

"These are the best home team in the league and I am really proud of the players in the second half, how they attacked it, their aggression, their desire and their lack of fear.

"I thought we deserved a point and could have nicked it at the end.

"I wouldn't have taken a point before the game. I wanted a win but at half-time I would have taken a point. It shows we are determined and have no fear about going up against one of the best squads in the league."

  3. Ipswich game 'not make or break' - Neilpublished at 10:08 GMT 20 March

Millwall's Championship match at Ipswich Town on Saturday (12:30 GMT) will not define their season, according to head coach Alex Neil.

The Lions are fourth in the Championship table, level on points with their third-placed opponents and only two short of the automatic promotion places.

"If you can beat the teams around you, you go into those games with a real confidence because they're the teams, if you make the play-offs, you may need to meet again," Neil told BBC Radio London.

"We understand the importance of the (Ipswich) game but it's not going to make or break our season although it is a vitally important match at this stage."

Millwall follow the game at Ipswich with a trip to second-placed Middlesbrough on Friday, 3 April (12:30 GMT) but Neil is keen not to place any more importance on matches against their fellow promotion challengers.

"It makes no difference. We've got eight games to play and we need to win as many as we can," he added.

"Naturally the more the games whittle down the more important they become because you can't make up the points when they're gone.

"We need to make sure we go and give the best account of ourselves in the game and try to win the match."

"I do believe Ipswich potentially have got more ways to win. If Middlesbrough don't unlock that formula of breaking teams down when they are sitting in that lower block and making things hard, that can do for them in terms of that top-two place."

Coventry are seven points clear at the top of the Championship and look well set for a place in next season's Premier League.

  5. Pick of the stats: Ipswich Town v Millwallpublished at 10:47 GMT 19 March

Side-by-side of Ipswich Town and Millwall club badges

Ipswich and Millwall will take on a titanic tussle at Portman Road as they hope to reach the top two on Saturday (12:30 GMT).

Both teams are only two points below current second place holders Middlesbrough.

With Boro set to play Blackburn Rovers - the side that beat Millwall on their last outing - at the same time, there could be a different name in the spot before the day is done.

    • Ipswich drew 0-0 with Millwall in this season's reverse fixture (on Boxing Day 2025); the last time they had two nil-nil draws with an opponent in a league campaign was in 2020-21 v Oxford (in League One).

    • Millwall have only won two of their last 10 away league games against Ipswich (D2 L6), with their last win there coming in January 2019 under Neil Harris (3-2).

    • No team have lost fewer Championship games in 2026 than Ipswich (2 – level with Southampton), with the Tractor Boys currently on a six-game unbeaten run (W4 D2).

    • After losing at home to Blackburn last time out, Millwall could suffer consecutive Championship defeats under Alex Neil for just the second time (previously in December 2025, v Hull and Blackburn).

    • Jack Clarke has scored 13 goals for Ipswich in the Championship this season – the last player to net 14+ for the Tractor Boys in the second tier was Martyn Waghorn in 2017-18 (16).

  6. 'A painful twist of events for Millwall'published at 09:30 GMT 18 March

Zak Sturge walks off disconsolately after being sent off against BlackburnImage source, Shutterstock

It's rarely a good thing for a referee to be 'the story' from a critical game such as Millwall's home defeat by Blackburn on Saturday.

But Andrew Kitchen's 59th-minute decision to show the Lions' Zak Sturge a straight red card for the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity was, to say the least, highly controversial.

There is of course no video assistant referee (VAR) in the Championship (thankfully), but had it been available, it would have shown the Rovers forward Ohashi 24 yards out, heading away from the Millwall goal and the 6ft 6in presence of Jake Cooper alongside as the last defender.

It might even have shown Femi Azeez being fouled on the very edge - or was it inside? - the Rovers penalty area late in the match.

Let's just say that the collective view of the 15,000 Millwall supporters inside The Den was that this was a stretch of the rule and a very poor performance by the ref overall.

    And that's putting it politely.

Especially with the chance of the Lions going into second place in the league on the line.

In truth, the game turned on the decision, but equally the home support should not ignore the series of chances before - and after - Luke Cundle's 54th-minute spectacular overhead goal.

It's a cliche, but if you don't take your chances you tend to get punished, and so it proved against a well-managed Rovers side, who exploited their man advantage very well.

This was certainly a painful twist of events for Millwall after a recent burst of terrific form.

But if this squad has shown anything this campaign, it's that they can bounce back from disappointment.

They will need this resilience in a huge six-pointer at Ipswich on Saturday.

  7. Do you want VAR in the Championship?published at 08:18 GMT 18 March

BBC Sport's have your say banner

There have been plenty of contentious decisions in the 2025-26 Championship season so far.

Offside goals given, perfectly good goals ruled out, red card offences missed, penalties not given, dubious spot-kicks awarded. You name it.

With the video assistant referee (VAR) only used for the play-off final, the outcome of every second-tier game in the regular season can hinge on how on-field officials see incidents in real time.

    • Would you want VAR introduced for every league game in the Championship?

    • If so, why?

    • And if not, let us know your reasons.

You can share your thoughts on VAR here or comment below, and we will publish a follow-up article soon with a selection of your responses.

  8. Too many key moments went against us - Neilpublished at 18:42 GMT 14 March

    Media caption,

Neil: 'It's not a red card!'

Millwall manager Alex Neil says that too many key moments went against them in their surprise home defeat to Blackburn Rovers.

The Lions missed the chance to move into the Championship's automatic promotion spots for the first time all season after Middlesbrough had dropped points at lunchtime as two late goals from Mathias Jorgensen saw Rovers come from behind to take all three points.

That came after substitute Luke Cundle had put them ahead but they lost defender Zak Sturge to a controversial red card just before the hour-mark.

"I've watched it back and I didn't feel as though it was a sending-off," Neil told BBC Radio London. "If that's a sending off, you are going to get them all the time.

"He was too far from goal, his touch took him away and we've got three recovering defenders.

"That was a poor decision and we then had two other chances before they got their first goal and they are really key moments.

"There were so many incidents in the game that if they work in your favour, you naturally come out with a positive result and too many of them, and some self-inflicted, were big, big calls in the game."

  9. Pick of the stats: Millwall v Blackburn Roverspublished at 11:52 GMT 13 March

Millwall could move into the automatic promotion spots when they welcome Blackburn Rovers on Saturday (15:00 GMT).

Should Middlesbrough fail to win Bristol City in the lunchtime kick-off, the Lions could overtake their promotion rivals if they extend their winning streak to a fifth consecutive league game.

But Rovers also have a lot on the line, with just one point keeping them safe from the bottom three as things stand and in real danger of dropping back into the relegation zone.

    • Millwall have won two of their last 20 league games against Blackburn Rovers (D6 L12), 1-0 home wins in 2019-20 and 2024-25.

    • Blackburn have won 16 points in their last seven league games against Millwall (W5 D1 L1), winning each of their last two against the Lions.

    • Millwall have lost four of their last six league games when starting the day 20+ points ahead of their opponents in the table (W2), losing 3-1 to Portsmouth most recently in February despite a 20-point pre-match advantage.

    • Blackburn have won five of their last eight away league games in London (L3), winning 3-1 at QPR in their most recent capital visit.

    • Mihalio Ivanovic has netted in two of his three Championship appearances against Blackburn, including the winner in a 1-0 win at the Den last season.

  10. Saints' Eckert & Lions' Azeez win February EFL awardspublished at 10:52 GMT 13 March

Southampton's Tonda Eckert and Millwall's Femi Azeez have won the Championship's manager and player of the month awards for February.

Saints took 13 points from a possible 15 as they went unbeaten last month, finishing with successive wins over QPR and Sheffield Wednesday to move into play-off contention.

Eckert was appointed Southampton's permanent head coach in December having been in interim charge when Will Still was sacked at the start of November.

He has won 12 of his 23 league games, taking the south coast club from 21st place to the race for a top-six finish.

Coventry City's Frank Lampard, Philippe Clement of Norwich City and Millwall boss Alex Neil were also nominated for the manager of the month award.

Though the Lions did win through winger Femi Azeez, who took home the player award after helping the side to win four of their five games in February.

The 24-year-old made five goal contributions, striking a superb volley to open the scoring against Birmingham in their 3-0 win at the Den.

Saints midfielder Leo Scienza was also up for the player award, alongside Sheffield United midfielder Sydie Peck and Sky Blues striker Haji Wright.

Norwich City boss Philippe Clement, Southampton's Tonda Eckert, Frank Lampard of Coventry City and Millwall head coach Alex Neil have been nominated for the Championship's manager of the month award for February.

The Canaries won four of their five league games last month to move comfortably clear of the relegation zone.

Southampton have climbed to within three points of the play-off places after 13 points from an unbeaten February which included coming from 3-0 down to beat Leicester City 4-3.

Coventry City lost the leadership of the Championship when they opened the month with a draw against Oxford United, but four consecutive wins, followed by back-to-back victories in March, means they are now eight points clear at the top.

Millwall also collected four wins from their five games, including victories at play-off rivals Wrexham and Preston.

The winner of the February award will be revealed on Friday, 13 March.

Well, Lady Luck certainly smiled on the Lions on Tuesday night in a tense 1-0 win over a physically-strong Derby County side.

That is three huge points, now putting Millwall just one away from the automatic promotion slot.

Blimey. It was not plain sailing at The Den though.

It has not been often that Millwall's defence has been so pushed around this season. More often it has been the other way around and those 15 clean sheets across the campaign so far have been justifiably earned.

But the Rams will rue a series of missed chances as the game stretched into the last few minutes which culminated in them hitting the post during added time.

An edgy close run thing then, but overall the Lions were good value for their fourth successive win.

If Millwall had taken more of the opportunities they created in the first half, then that frantic finale would have been a little easier on the nerves.

So, can we yet make an outsider tilt at that second spot currently occupied by Middlesbrough?

We will need Boro to drop some points before Millwall visit on Good Friday, but as Blondie once sang, dreaming is free…

Millwall boss Alex Neil felt his side deserved their hard-fought win over promotion rivals Derby at The Den.

Josh Coburn scored in the 1-0 win and Derby missed a host of chances and hit the post in stoppage time.

But Neil told BBC Radio London: "I thought across the piece, I thought we deserved to win the game. I thought first half, we were the better side. I thought the difference in the game was always going to be who keeps the ball at the top end of the pitch.

"I thought Josh Coburn did that brilliantly for us in the first half and it allowed us to build ourselves into the game and create opportunities. I thought our defenders dealt with their centre-forwards in the first half.

"The players have done fantastically well and we've already beaten our points tally for last season."

Millwall are just a point behind second-placed Middlesbrough, but Neil says he won't be losing any sleep thinking about them.

"I don't really think about Middlesbrough," he said. "I don't think about the pressure. I just think we've got games coming up and we need to try and win them. So, yeah, it will be what it will be."

With Middlesbrough not in action until Wednesday, Millwall can close with within a point of second place in the Championship with a win over Derby County on Tuesday evening (19:45 GMT).

Derby are three points outside the top six as they travel to south London.

    • Millwall are unbeaten in their past six league games against Derby, alternating between a win (3) and a draw (3) each time.

    • Derby have lost just one of their past eight away league games against Millwall (W3 D4), and are unbeaten in four since a 2-1 loss in August 2018.

    • Having lost three of their first four home league games this season, Millwall have now lost just two of their past 14. All five of their defeats at The Den this term have been by more than one goal.

    • Derby have lost their past two away league games, last losing more consecutively in January 2025 (4).

    • Derby's Ben Brereton has scored four goals in his past five league games against Millwall, with all of those strikes coming with Blackburn between 2021 and 2023.
