Southampton beat Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round, knocking the 2021 champions out of the competition after scoring in the second half of extra time at St Mary's.

Saints took the lead just before the break as Cyle Larin scored from the penalty spot, after Caleb Okoli fouled Sam Edozie, who showed quick feet in the box.

The Foxes equalised just after the break as Oliver Skipp produced an impressive overhead kick that snuck into the net at the near post.

But substitute Bree then headed Southampton into the lead in the second half of added time to send the Saints through to the next round.

Leicester's misery was compounded as, by virtue of Blackburn's win against QPR, they slipped into the Championship bottom three prior to returning to league action in a week's time.

After a slow start to the game, Leicester were denied by the finest of margins 10 minutes before the break.

Stephy Mavididi broke down the left and let a shot off at Saints keeper George Long whose save rebounded back into the Leicester attacker and towards goal.

But Ryan Manning was on hand to head the ball off the line, referee Matt Corlett checked his watch to see if the ball had crossed the line but on this occasion it was still in play.

Southampton won a penalty just before the break as Edozie broke into the box and was brought down by Okoli with Larin stepping up to place the ball home into the bottom left hand corner.

Skipp's acrobatics drew Leicester level but Southampton kept on pushing and were denied when Kuryu Matsuki struck from range at Leicester keeper Jakub Stolarczyk who spilled the ball into the path of Cameron Archer, but Okoli brilliantly managed to divert it wide of the post.

Leicester nearly won the tie deep into injury time of the 90 minutes as the ball flashed across the goal line but the Southampton defence managed to scramble it clear and keep the score level to send the game to extra time.

The game was won when a Ryan Manning free-kick found its way to Bree at the back post, as he managed to head into the roof of the net from close range.

Southampton boss Tonda Eckert:

"I'm very pleased, today was a big day for the academy.

"It's a big day for the football club and just shows that we have a lot of talent coming up.

"We are making those steps to become a winning football team and that won't happen overnight but we are heading in the right direction to be able to win different games of football.

"The baseline is that we need to win and today we did that with a lot of energy and a lot of our young players on the pitch."

Leicester City interim boss Andy King:

"I'm pleased with the performance on the main and there were plenty of positives from the game like playing four teenagers who I thought went about things really well.

"They were very mature in their performance and stuck to the game plan which is how I wanted them to.

"But in key moments we have to be better, we have to be stronger with the challenge on the edge of the box with one minute to go before half time and then don't need to give the penalty away.

"We got oursleves back into the game and we just can't concede from a set play in added time but across the game I was pleased with the performance."
