Alessia Russo scored a first-half hat-trick as Arsenal beat north London rivals Tottenham to move up to second in the Women's Super League.

The England striker was on target twice in the first seven minutes at Emirates Stadium to put the Gunners in control, heading in from a corner before confidently rounding the goalkeeper and stroking in her second.

Tottenham pulled one back when Arsenal's Frida Maanum headed into her own net under pressure from Cathinka Tandberg but the hosts soon restored their two-goal advantage.

A poor pass out from Spurs goalkeeper Lize Kop presented Russo with the ball 15 yards out and she thumped it home to complete her first hat-trick for Arsenal.

Caitlin Foord put the result beyond doubt with a smart turn and finish in the 61st minute with Beth England's thunderous late strike providing little consolation for Spurs.

Arsenal had the last word, though, with Stina Blackstenius running clear to slot in the fifth in stoppage time.

  5. 'We have to iron these individual errors out'published at 20:14 GMT

    FT: Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham head coach Martin Ho speaking to Sky Sports: "We gave away three goals through individual errors, so I felt it was the same story as the last game. We gave them opportunities we didn't need to give them and we need to get better in those moments. Then they scored two other goals through good finishes.

"We did have moments ourselves because we got those two goals. It maybe changed the game a little bit, but we have to look at ourselves and own it today. We have to take accountability for those individual moments to make sure we can take a step forward.

"We took a lot from last weekend's second-half performance and we can take a lot from this one, as I thought we were better in the second half again. We did have good moments in the first half but you cannot give three goals away and expect away to come away from a game with anything. We have to iron these things out to make sure they don't keep happening."

On whether he contemplated bringing on Bethany England earlier: "No. I was happy with where the game was at. The team were fine and we were in a good place because we were actually pushing Arsenal back. We had good control but decided to freshen things up by bringing her on to give us something different up top.

"She obviously scored her goal and got us back in the game at 4-2, but then Arsenal got another goal from an individual error in the middle of the pitch. We got punished there."

On what he said at full-time in the huddle: "There are large parts we can take from the game that were good, but we have to take account for those individual errors. We have to go away and work tirelessly during the week."

    Arsenal

More from Arsenal boss Renee Slegers on what success looks like for her this season: "Keep on doing what we're doing. We are proud of the run we're on, but it doesn't mean anything. We have to look forward and only look at ourselves, one game at a time. We can only look at ourselves and the group is in a great place, so we want to keep building what we're building.

"I've learned to stay calm and see what's around me because there's so many good people and so much competence around me. I would never be able to achieve all of this myself, I would go down. I really would because it is so demanding, so we are doing all of this together.

"I want to do the very, very best for this club, which means finding the margins which will make us win. We also reflect and analyse constantly, so I'm very happy to be part of it."

  7. 'We were resilient throughout the whole game'published at 20:05 GMT

    FT: Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

    Arsenal

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers speaking to Sky Sports: "I'm very happy with the win, of course. We were really good in the first half in different moments. I was happy to get the early goals here at the Emirates Stadium with the support of our fans behind us. I wanted us to come out fast and we did that through Alessia [Russo]'s three goals. The second half was more about management. They spent more time with the ball and that's something that we want to look at, how we get more pressure on the ball.

"We managed it really well. I felt we were resilient throughout the whole game and we finished things off at 5-2, so I'm really happy with it. It was a short turnaround for us, with all the big games we're playing, so to play this way and score five goals is very pleasing."

On Alessia Russo's leadership: "She is also part of the leadership group at Arsenal now. She is always herself, wanting to bring her best version, and she is very humble. She is very lovely and respectful to anyone she works with or passes by. You can see that she's stepping up. In training she is communicating more and instructing more, driving the team more by being more vocal. That's really good I think. She's definitely developing that and we love to see it."

  8. 'I'll play anywhere'published at 19:59 GMT

    FT: Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

    Arsenal

More from Arsenal forward Alessia Russo speaking to Sky Sports about attacking the space in between the lines: "I like to peel off the shoulders, working with your wingers coming inside is something that we do a lot. As soon as she [Olivia Smith] starts running in I was looking to run into the space that she had just left. It was a great ball to set me up."

On playing in different roles: "At first it is something that maybe I struggled with a little bit, but now I understand the details of the ten a bit more I find it a bit easier, knowing what I am needed to do out of possession is a big one, it is a big role in the team. On the ball I like both [roles] because they offer different parts of my game. I'll play anywhere I don't care."

Arsenal captain Kim Little speaking to Sky Sports: "I don't get emotional but I was told I was getting some surprises today. I hadn't overthought it so when my nieces, nephews and family were standing there at the start, and the crowd-surfing banner came out, I was so overcome. I've never had a moment like that and I never will again, so it did make me emotional. I'm so proud to represent this club and I want to thank them for making it so special for me.

"You have to enjoy [occasions like this] but you also have to keep your head in the game. Today was the biggest challenge I've ever had in that respect, but the way we started showed that we were ready for it. Alessia [Russo] scoring those three goals just got us on our way too."

On her team-mate Alessia Russo: "She is always there in terms of her application. As everyone else will say in the team, how she is as a person is just incredible. This year, she has stepped up in terms of leadership as well. She has come into our little leadership group that sits with Renee [Slegers], so she is growing in that sense too. That in itself has brought out even more in her own game.

"She is always great and always going to score, but I love how she presents herself and takes that leadership responsibility. I knew she always would, but she has done it in her stride."

  10. 'Good three points moving forward'published at 19:52 GMT

    FT: Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

    Arsenal

Arsenal forward Alessia Russo speaking to Sky Sports: "It's nice to get a win. The North London derby is a big game for us, especially at home with all of our fans, so yes we're really happy with it."

On getting her first Arsenal hat-trick: "It feels really nice. I love to score goals as much as I can and to do it here at the Emirates in a north London derby is really nice. It's a good three points moving on to the rest of the season.

"The first one, it's a great ball in from Katie [McCabe]. We work on set pieces all the time and it's nice when one comes off.

"We practice one v one finishing all the time in training, so it is about decision making and using the goalkeeper to make your mind up. As soon as she came out I knew I was going to take it around her.

"Then the third one, again something that we do a lot is high pressure and making that count."

  11. 'We are building our momentum'published at 19:43 GMT

    FT: Arsenal 5-2 Tottenham

    Arsenal

Arsenal goalscorer Caitlin Foord speaking to Sky Sports: "We created a lot of chances and put the ball in the back of the net a couple of times, Less [Alessia Russo] getting a hat-trick. We are building our momentum and the girls have been in good form. We wanted to continue that and we did that tonight.

"I was super pleased to get into the game, get that last game out of the way now to move on, and to put the ball in the back of the net again. I'm always pleased about that because I like doing my part for the team.

"The girls have been great since I've been away [at the Asia Cup]. They have scored lots of goals and got lots of wins so it was exciting to watch from all the way on the other side of the world.

"Our next game is massive. Obviously we're up, but it's always a tough game against Chelsea. We know we have to be at our best to get to the next stage."

On being able to celebrate team-mate Kim Little at Emirates Stadium: "It's the perfect night for her with the crowd here at Emirates Stadium. She is an amazing person and leader so I'm very happy for her."

A fantastic Arsenal performance. It was a bit more of an even second half, Tottenham did ever so well to regain some composure and start to put pressure on.

But it was all about Arsenal today and how many they wanted to put in the back of the net really. The first half just set the tone.

A great result overall, but Spurs gave us a game. We can't defend like we did when we get to the business-end of the Champions League. Hopefully Leah Williamson is back soon and we can solidify things a bit.

Stina Blackstenius would've been sitting their in the first half itching to get on, especially with the amount of space that was on offer for her team-mates.

It hasn't been the same in this second half, Tottenham have been much better, but she knows where the back of the net is these days. She is really, really good in 1v1 situations.

As an Arsenal fan, I have to say Tottenham are a different beast to earlier in the season. I'm glad we're still beating them, but it makes the north London derby much more fun to play against a competitive side.
