A late second-half penalty scored by Ceri Holland seals Liverpool's win
Beata Olsson's sixth Women's Super League goal of the season and Ceri Holland's late penalty gave Liverpool a priceless victory in their bottom-of-the-table match against Leicester City.
The lowly Foxes were unable to fill their bench, which diminished their hopes of a league double over the Reds, and the outcome means they have lost five out of five matches in the WSL since the turn of the year.
Gareth Taylor's home side started strongly and went ahead in the 10th minute. Olsson tucked in from close range after a dangerous low cross from Mia Enderby, capping a swift team move upfield.
Liverpool's second goal came when second-half substitute Aurelie Csillag was brought down by Asmita Ale in the box, and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Holland stepped up to take the spot-kick, sending the ball past Leicester's Janina Leitzig and in off the left post.
Leicester snatched a 1-0 win when these sides met in September, despite finishing with 10 players, but they were second best for much of this game.
Alisha Lehmann twice failed to test Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk with opportunities in the first half, and at the other end Liverpool pushed for a second goal following Olsson's opener.
Enderby kept Leicester defender Ashleigh Neville busy, sending in a string of crosses throughout the first half towards the likes of Olsson and Holland.
The second half began with Leicester again struggling, although their changes at the hour mark brought more energy as Rachel Williams and Lehmann made way for Noemie Mouchon and Missy Goodwin.
It sparked a flurry from Leicester, and Falk needed to be sharp.
Play was held up after a clash of heads between Leicester's Sarah Mayling and Holland, but both were able to continue, and it was the latter who had the final say.
Liverpool's win means they climb a spot to 10th in the 12-team top flight, going above West Ham and now four points clear of Leicester who remain at the foot on nine points, rooted to the relegation play-off spot for now.
Analysis: Leicester facing scrap for survival
With just one point between the teams at kick-off, this was a big day for both sides. Leicester would have hoped to draw on their home win over the Reds, but this time they were second best.
They have now gone three games and 319 minutes without scoring in the league - and their only WSL goal in 2026 was an own goal by West Ham's Eva Nystrom.
Swiss striker Lehmann, who joined in January, had a quiet afternoon. She played 63 minutes and had one shot on target and four touches in the opposition box, failing to seriously trouble Liverpool keeper Falk.
The Foxes were also behind Liverpool on most statistics, with fewer shots, chances and corners.
Rick Passmoor's side find themselves mired in an unforgiving battle to avoid the bottom spot come the end of the season.
Liverpool are not out of the woods yet themselves, but this result gives them a small cushion.
The Foxes' next game is at home on Sunday, 22 March against an Aston Villa side who forced a 0-0 draw against leaders Manchester City in this round, while Liverpool travel to face Brighton and Hove Albion.
