Vimal Yoganathan's goal was his first since November for Barnsley
Barnsley moved into the top half of League One with a win against Exeter amidst a fan protest against the club's ownership.
David McGoldrick and Vimal Yoganathan put the hosts 2-0 up before the game was stopped after home fans threw tennis balls on to the pitch midway through the first half.
Jayden Wareham's 16th goal of the season with 15 minutes to play turned out to be just a consolation.
McGoldrick opened the scoring for the hosts after eight minutes, calmly slotting past Joe Whitworth in the Exeter goal after being found unmarked in the penalty area by the lively Reyes Cleary.
The veteran striker then turned provider for Barnsley's second goal eight minutes later, crossing for Yoganathan nod home into the back of the net.
The second half lacked many clearcut chances, but Wareham made it a nervy final 15 minutes for the hosts as he pulled one back from inside the area.
However, Barnsley held on for a valuable three points which moved them up to 12th in the table.
