Isobel Goodwin scored a late equaliser as London City Lionesses ended Chelsea's five-game winning run with a deserved point at The Den.

The newly crowned Women's League Cup winners started brightly and took a deserved lead when Johanna Rytting Kaneryd ran on to Aggie Beever-Jones' flick and steered a cool finish past onrushing goalkeeper Elene Lete.

Teenage midfielder Lexi Potter, who scored her first Women's Super League goal on her top-flight debut against Brighton in midweek, sliced a shot wide from 17-year-old debutant Chloe Sarwie's cross as Sonia Bompastor's side continued to dominate the first half.

London City's only attempt before the break came from Grace Geyoro's free-kick on the edge of the area, which the France international fired straight at goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

Beever-Jones should have doubled Chelsea's lead within 90 seconds of the restart but the hosts were much improved after the break, peppering Hampton's goal in the latter stages in search of an equaliser.

Jana Fernandez and Freya Godfrey both blazed over the crossbar from long range, while second-half substitute Delphine Cascarino had a close-range effort diverted over the crossbar by Veerle Buurman.

Cascarino then had a goal-bound header tipped wide by Hampton, who could only stand and watch moments later as Julia Roddar struck the top of the crossbar after Chelsea had failed to clear a corner.

But the Lionesses' pressure finally told eight minutes from time, when Goodwin nodded home the rebound after Hampton had parried Lucia Corrales' powerful strike into the forward's path.

Analysis: Lionesses claim superb point as Chelsea's injury woes worsen

London City boss Eder Maestre had urged his players to provide "an exciting experience" for the home fans at The Den, which was staging a Lionesses game for the first time as their regular home - the Copperjax Community Stadium - is being used by Bromley's men on Saturday afternoon.

However, there was little for Lionesses fans to get excited about in a first half dominated by Chelsea, who looked unlikely to relinquish their grip on proceedings once Rytting Kaneryd had put them ahead.

The second half, though, was an entirely different story.

Fourteen of the Lionesses' 15 attempts came after half-time, with the majority of their best opportunities coming in the final 20 minutes as they chased an equaliser.

A combination of Hampton and the woodwork preserved the Blues' narrow advantage until the closing stages, but there was nothing the Chelsea and England goalkeeper could do about Goodwin's late header into an unguarded net.

This could well be a damaging result for Bompastor's side, who were the only team in the top four to drop points on Saturday after victories for Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal - who still have two games in hand on their London rivals in the race for the Champions League places.

Chelsea's frustrating afternoon was compounded by an injury to Beever-Jones, who appeared to roll her ankle after a second-half challenge from Roddar.

Beever-Jones, who looked inconsolable as she left the pitch, joins a lengthy Chelsea injury list that already includes the likes of Millie Bright, Niamh Charles and Mayra Ramirez.

But with a Champions League quarter-final trip to Arsenal coming up in midweek, the Blues have little time to feel sorry for themselves.

What's next for these teams?

Chelsea visit Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday, 24 March (20:00 GMT), while London City travel to West Ham in the WSL five days later, on Sunday, 29 March (12:00).
