Menopause
In this week's programme Dr Mark Porter investigates the menopause.
Consequences of the menopause
Mark’s guest in the studio is Dr Heather Currie, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. They hear from women who have experienced the effects of the menopause: hot flushes, sleeplessness, sexual dysfunction and continence problems.
Treatments
The menopause is a natural part of the ageing process, but its symptoms can be disruptive. How effective is HRT, and are there associated risks? And do alternative therapies work? Dr Sarah Jarvis, women’s health specialist at the Royal College of GPs, explores the options.
Osteoporosis
Menopause can cause bones to weaken, causing fractures. Mark visits Mo Akmal, an orthopaedic surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital, who demonstrates an innovative treatment for osteoporotic fractures. And Mark and Heather discuss whether there should be more early detection and prevention of osteoporosis |
