Harlequins ended a six-game Prem losing streak with a dogged 18-14 win to spoil Bristol's showpiece return to the Principality Stadium and hit their play-off hopes.
Bears captain Fitz Harding and Quins counterpart Alex Dombrandt traded a try apiece in a stunted first-half as a missed Quins conversion was the only difference between the sides.
But Bristol inaccuracy crept in as Harlequins took control in the second 40 minutes, with Jarrod Evans' penalty and Rodrigo Isgro's converted try putting them on course for victory.
Steven Luatua threw Bristol a lifeline with a try in the closing stages but a Jamie Benson penalty kicked Harlequins four points clear for a deserved win, while defeat leaves Bristol fifth in the table, now seven points behind Exeter in fourth.

The win is Harlequins first away from home since they beat Saracens 23-12 on 22 March 2025 and their first in the league this campaign since October.
Spearheaded by skipper Dombrandt, the morale-boosting victory also comes just days after head coach Jason Gilmore was confirmed in his role beyond this season.
In their second 'Big Day Out' game in Cardiff in front of a crowd of 45,119, Bristol needed a win after defeat by Leicester six days before but never got going as errors increasingly defined their game and Quins frustrated them at the breakdown.
Harding put them 7-0 up seven minutes in, twisting over the line after Harry Randall had switched the direction of play with Bristol pressurising Harlequins' line.
Quins were initially unable to make the most of their time in possession, until they turned Bristol over following a tap and go penalty, and kicked into the Bears' 22 - one of 12 turnovers across the 80 minutes.
And after seeing a try chalked off early on, Dombrandt had his name and his team on the board on 23 minutes, stretching over with the ball.

Bristol were unable to follow-up their win against Harlequins at Twickenham in December in Cardiff
Evans kicked a penalty early in the second half to nudge Harlequins 8-7 in front and while Bristol brought on big hitters in centre Benhard Janse van Rensburg and wing Gabriel Ibitoye it changed little for them.
They finally entered Harlequins' 22 for the first time in the second half on 53 minutes, but Gabriel Oghre was held up.
Harlequins then swung the momentum further as they swept down the other end in a quick-flowing attack that saw Isgro dive over.
Luatua gave Bears fans hope in the closing minutes, with his score at least ensuring his side took a losing bonus point from the game, but another Dombrandt turnover from the restart awarded Quins a penalty, which Benson kicked to seal the win.
'We needed a good performance' - reaction
Bristol defence coach Jordan Crane said:
"The general feeling's frustration, the event that's been put on and what we showed.
"It was more our inaccuracy, that was the real frustrating thing. The game was won and lost at the breakdown, and we didn't win it.
"We probably didn't react quick enough, get off our outside foot going clean out the ball to be able to create pressure, especially in that first half."
Harlequins head coach Jason Gilmore said:
"We spoke a lot about our mindset and what we wanted to do against Bristol - they're a very good team, very good with the ball.
"We wanted to dictate terms through the contact and our line speed. I thought the boys did that in spades.
"We've copped it a little bit the last little period, probably rightly so in certain aspects - we're aware of it and working hard.
"We're not out of the woods either, there's still a lot of work to do at this club to be where back where we need to be, but for us to compete against Sale next week, it'll be a physical battle, we needed a good performance today."
