Van Steenis beats Edwards by knockout

More from Costello van Steenis on Fabian Edwards: "He is one of the guys that could have been champion and could be champion in the future, but not by fighting me. He is one of the best fighters in the world.

"I was really surprised that he tried to wrestle me. I noticed that he was nervous because I saw him a few times in the lobby in the hotel. He was acting weird, listening to loud music; that gives you signs that he is uncomfortable, trying to shut himself out.

"In the first fight he was really cocky and aggressive. In this fight, he didn't really look at me that much."

  4. Four months from hell for Edwards brotherspublished at 23:06 GMT 20 March

It's been a devastating four months for the Edwards brothers.

Leon Edwards was stopped for the first time in his MMA career by Carlos Prates last November in the UFC. The defeat leaves his career hanging in the balance after three successive defeats.

Fast forward to now and Fabian Edwards is also stopped in a potentially career-defining title fight.

Both brothers have shown they can come back from defeat and rise again. But it's a hard spell for one of the most successful fighter brothers in the sport.

  5. What next for Edwards?published at 23:02 GMT 20 March

Van Steenis beats Edwards by knockout

Fabian Edwards has proved before that he can bounce back from defeat in a title fight. He's still only 32 but how much will a third loss when so close to glory affect him?

With the PFL middleweight division being shallow in general, a couple of wins for Edwards will put him right back into title contention once again.

    Will he finally land gold?

AJ McKee spoke after his victory: "First of all I just want to give all glory to God. There is nothing without him.

"I want to thank all the fans here, shoutout to Madrid. We are the first to do it here and we are going to keep setting big things off. I'm just happy to be a part of it

"The game plan was to take him down and beat him up, but I have been wanting to beat people at their own game and show that I'm well-rounded. Stand up with a striker, let's get it."

On who he wants next: "I don't care - I'm the Mercenary, you put me with any name and I'll do my job. Whoever they put in front of me, I'm taking out. That's the name of the game."

Costello van Steenis spoke after his victory: "It went exactly as I wanted it to.

"I didn't do that alone; thank you to the crowd. We are the best country in the world."

On Fabian Edwards: "We fought six years ago, and I hated this guy. With all due respect, I don't hate him at all; it's just sport and we had a bit of beef. He is one of the best fighters in the world and so am I. It takes two people to make a great fight. Fabian can beat anybody in the world, it was just my lucky night tonight.

"I believe we are the best organisation with the best middleweight fighters in the world."

Van Steenis beats Edwards by knockout

It was the battle of the brothers tonight, with Costello and Gino van Steenis celebrating together in the cage.

Gino won his earlier fight in the prelims before his older brother, Costello, knocked Fabian Edwards out with some hard elbows to the temple.

Fabian and Leon Edwards were left looking pretty heartbroken in the cage.

It was really beautfiul work from Costello. It was direct, in to the side of the head - all of the stuff you need to keep you concisous is around that area.

Beautiful work, incredible defence, and Spain are on their feet.

Fair play to Van Steenis but what on earth was the plan from Edwards there?

Surely after the first couple of takedown attempts go the way of the Spaniard, you have to change it up. He put himself in a dangerous position and Van Steenis exploited it.

I cannot get my head around that. He was in the position, landing elbows and knees and the level changed. Edwards wasted so much energy wrestling in that second round. Crazy work!

    Edwards survives!

He defends the situation really well despite it looking over on a couple of occasions. Edwards rises to his feet with a few seconds left and lands heavily on Van Steenis.

The champion seemed a bit stunned by the position he found himself in, but does well to fight off Edwards. Great end to the round.
