Scotland under-21s were swept aside by a dynamic and direct Portuguese side in Estoril as their European Championship qualification hopes were left in doubt.

Scott Gemmill's side were pinned inside their own third for much of the game, with the hosts' wide players Roger Fernandes and Carlos Forbs impressing from early on.

After a disappointing 0-0 draw with Czechia on Friday, any hopes of bouncing back looked unlikely from the off, with Scotland often camped on the edge of the area.

The former opened the scoring after half an hour, sweeping in from the edge of the six-yard box, before Daniel Banjaqui added a deserved second just minutes before the interval with a low, driving effort from the corner of the box.

The second half followed a similarly difficult pattern, with Goncalo Moreira's well-placed strike adding to the home side's lead.

Scotland are third in their qualification group with 11 points, three behind Czechia and five behind Portugal, who have a game in hand.

They remain level on points with Bulgaria, and five ahead of both Azerbaijan and Gibraltar.
