The recruitment in the summer and I know we all got excited, rightly so. The way this Liverpool squad has been structured and built, there are some massive lags in what this squad should look like.

The full-backs tonight, Jeremie Frimpong, can only play 45 minutes because he is just not good enough.

Milos Kerkez, on the other side, I am not sure why Andy Robertson is not playing a game like this. Kerkez is all over the place.

With the money spent, this squad should have more variation and profiles in key positions than what they have right now.

Ousmane Dembele, speaking to Amazon Prime: "We are so happy that we were able to win this game because it was really difficult, especially in the second half. We were able to find a way to win, we are delighted.

"I think we're at the same level as we were last season and hopefully we can win the semi-final, and achieve the same as last season and win it."

When PSG needs to explode and when they need to be dynamic, they are dynamic.

Liverpool have not got any dynamism in the team at all. Even Rio Ngumoha, when he came on he tried to run at Hakimi.

The lad is 17, it is a great lesson for him tonight, and he will have to learn from it. You have to look at the other team and think 'that's the goal'.

PSG boss Luis Enrique, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It was an intense match between two teams who played really good football.

"The first half was more for us. We could create a few chances but the second half was a different story, we suffered a lot, they pressed hard but we overcome the press two times and scored two goals.

"If you try to win those kind of matches you need high intensity and defence as a team, today we showed we are ready to play with the ball but when we don't have the ball we can do it.

"It is a different history because last year thought we could not go (far) in the Champions League because we were so young, but we became the champions but we need to grow and I think we can grow."

Looking forward to Sunday, I look at that forward line and think will Arne Slot go for Rio Ngumoha?

Will Ngumoha's confidence have been hit tonight? Gakpo, possibly through the middle.

Mo Salah will probably play on the right-hand-side, and it is going to be fascinating.

Liverpool go into that game as underdogs. It is not often we go into a Merseyside derby that way.

More from Arne Slot, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Last week was of course tough and very difficult but we showed in a week that we can improve a lot and it is a big compliment to the players that they showed how they could be.

"The players kept on going, even after going 1-0 down and that is a big compliment to them.

"If you look at xG we should have scored two but didn't score one and that has happened far too often this season."

On focus now on getting top five: "Of course. That is what we have to play for now in the coming weeks. The good thing is Alex (Isak) is back, well able to make minutes.

"Much has been said that the club is in a transition. The club has sold 8-10 players to make money to sign five or so very talented players.

"We have to sell to buy. We are losing some players on a free transfer. It is a big challenge in the summer but the club has shown this model works. As I said many times the future looks very good, especially if we can sign players after good players leaving this summer."

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Amazon Prime: "We got much more than we deserved last week by only losing 2-0, like last season. Also the same as last season today we got much less than we deserved. We should have won but it is from the quality of them why they don't concede."

On Hugo Ekitike's injury: "Not too good. We could all see it didn't look good. Let's wait and see what it will be. In the second half he went home and I haven't seen him yet.

"As it seems to be, losing a player is something we have had many times this season but it is especially hard for him because you never want to be injured, especially at this time of the season."

On the decision to overturn Liverpool penalty: "If you look at our season I am completely not surprised because so many decisions have gone against us. For me it is quite simple, if the referee did not give a penalty the VAR would never have intervened.

"As I said I don't think it is a surprise this season, not just the Champions League but also in the Premier League many decisions have gone against us.

"We couldn't score a goal, we had many chances."

The late signing of Alexander Isak derailed everything for me. You could have kept Hugo Ekitike and not spent £130m on Isak, keep Florian Wirtz and maybe that £130m you spent on Isak you could have spent on someone else. Another centre-back? How did Marc Guehi not end up here? It is ridiculous.

Barcelona came out of the traps and it looked like 'how many goals will they score?'. It was a perfect start.

After the break in play, all of a sudden Atletico got back into the game. That break in play was pivotal. You have to credit the players. That's when you need experienced players. Everything that they were tonight was enough to beat a young Barcelona side.

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick: "We played a fantastic first half. We had to score more goals. It was really possible. At the end we conceded the goal. In the end, it’s football. But the attitude, I am really proud of that.

"The next step is to win La Liga. We have to show the attitude, the mentality. We are all disappointed. For everyone, it’s a big dream to win the Champions League. Of course we have to learn but we also have a young team. We have to improve and we will improve next season.

"Today, it’s also good to speak about how the players are doing. Every day we have to learn more, we have to be better and this is what we want to do.

"I know it’s very disappointing for everyone but it’s football, it’s life and we have to come back.

"For me, I don’t care about when we win La Liga. I want to win La Liga. It doesn’t matter what day we win La Liga. Now we can focus on La Liga. It’s tough because everyone believed that we could make it happen today but we have to accept it and we will come back."

  20. 'Isak was non-existent here tonight'published at 22:38 BST

FT: Liverpool 0-2 PSG (0-4 agg)

    Stephen Warnock
Former Liverpool defender on BBC Radio 5 Live at Anfield

I don't know what to say about Alexander Isak. I watched him here against Fulham and he was awful.

He was non-existent here tonight. He didn't want to get any physical contact alongside Marquinhos. He was sort of wanting to bump into him. There was no wanting to build a platform for his team to get onto the ball.

Cody Gakpo did more in five minutes than Isak did in the whole first half. He is not fit. He is nowhere near fit. That's partly due to the injury he sustained against Tottenham, but sitting out pre-season, he has not got one ounce of fitness in him this season and it tells.

And you think you can put him against PSG, in your biggest game of the season against the best team in Europe and think you get a performance in 45 minutes. You can't just switch it on and off.
