Three points secure but there's no time to rest for Hansi Flick's side.

They will now catch the flight to England for their Champions League last 16 first leg against Newcastle on Tuesday, 10 March (20:00 GMT).

The home side had the most shots and shots on target while they also generated almost double the expected goals (xG) of Barcelona but it's the Blaugrana who came out on top at San Mames ultimately.

A huge win for Barcelona then and this is what it does to the table.

It helps Hansi Flick's side restore their four-point advantage at the top of La Liga.

But Real Madrid cannot be ruled out as they will look to pounce in case of a Barca slip-up.

Not their greatest performance but Barcelona get the job done here against Athletic Club.

And you know what they say about champions? They find a way to win even when they’re nowhere near their best.

It was Lamine Yamal who made the difference on the night with a fantastic curling effort in the 68th minute.

Dani Vivian drives with the ball forward but Pedri launches into a sliding tackle to stop the Athletic man.

It ends up a foul against the home side and Vivian has been shown a yellow card by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero.

Athletic substitute Robert Navarro's eyes lit up as he gets on the end of a inviting cross played towards the post.

But his volley lacks execution as it flashes across the goal without troubling Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

That could have been the moment for the home side!

Five minutes have been added on at the end of this second half.

Five minutes for Barcelona to hold onto their precious 1-0 lead.

Oihan Sancet pulls the trigger from distance for Athletic.

But that's gone high, wide and not very handsome!

Barcelona have all 11 players behind the ball as Athletic probe for a late equaliser.

But the visitors are holding on without breaking much of a sweat.

Robert Lewandowski plants an arm in the face of Andoni Gorosabel after the two players are involved in a prolonged physical battle. But the referee lets it go without a card.

This game is looking like it's going to end in a whimper.

That Barcelona goal has really taken the wind out of Athletic's sails.

With 10 minutes to go, it's very much about preservation for Barcelona now.

If they can hold on to this win, they will go four points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid with 11 games of the season remaining.

Ronald Araujo comes on and takes the captain's armband from Raphinha.

He replaces Marc Casado as Eric Garcia now moves into the midfield.

Great players only need a single moment to flip a game on its head - and he's definitely one of them.

Athletic were having the best period of the game before Lamine Yamal opened the scoring for Barcelona.

Ernesto Valverde responds with a double change as Gorka Guruzeta and Mikel Vesga come on.

Captain Inaki Williams and Alejandro Rego, who was on a yellow card, make way.

Lamine Yamal finds an unmarked Robert Lewandowski inside the box.

But the Pole fails to hit the target as his shot is blocked inside the box.

Barcelona have scored in every game this season across competitions except a 3-0 defeat by Chelsea.

On that occasion at Stamford Bridge in November, the Premier League side had ended the La Liga side's 53-match scoring streak.

Will they be denied by Athletic tonight?
