Mikey Moore's 88th-minute header rescued a draw for Rangers against Scottish Premiership strugglers Livingston, who blew a two-goal lead after Cristian Montano's red card.

However, the shock slip-up at the bottom club hampers Rangers' title hopes, leaving them four points adrift of leaders Hearts with 10 games remaining. Livingston's deficit on second-bottom Kilmarnock is now eight points.

A venomous volley from Brooklyn Kabongolo and a drilled effort from Lewis Smith had Marvin Bartley's side 2-0 up, threatening their first win in any competition since August.

Had they been able to hold on, it would have been one of the biggest upsets in Premiership history, but their challenge became much tougher when Montano was sent off on the hour for a last-man challenge on Djeidi Gassama.

However, the incredible performance of Jerome Prior in the Livingston goal, and an unbelievable goalline clearance from Danny Finlayson, started to give the basement dwellers hope.

But Emmanuel Fernandez's thunderous strike in the 81st minute suggested Rangers were not done and Moore then glanced in James Tavernier's cross for the leveller.

There appeared to be a chance for Rangers to get a winner when Moore was brought down on the edge of the box by Cammy Kerr. On the replay, it looked like the Livingston player didn't get any of the ball but after a lengthy VAR check, play went on.

Analysis: Rohl's revolution rocked by heroic Livingston

Rangers accumulated an xG (expected goals) of 3.63 and 31 shots in total, 21 inside the box and 14 on target.

Ordinarily, that would be a more than decent attacking performance. But with only two goals to show for it, suddenly it looks particularly profligate.

Yes, Rangers should have been more clinical. But often they were only repelled by phenomenal Prior saves.

A header from Tuur Rommens. Curled efforts from Moore and Bojan Miovski. A stramash just before half-time. Countless chances, all stopped by Prior.

The Livingston goalkeeper has had a tough season so far but he turned up in a big way against Rangers, making nine saves.

Rather, it was Rangers' defence that proved more costly. Rohl admitted pre-match counter-attacks and set-plays would be Livingston's main threats, and he called it spot on.

At two set-pieces, Rangers switched off. In the first, Kabongolo broke free and in the second, Rangers failed to pick up Smith at the second phase.

Just two errors, but costly ones.

As for Livingston, this result must delight and confound in equal measure. Where has this performance been all season? The same could be said of the recent late loss to Celtic.

They were heroic here, to a man. The change to a back three has solidified them while Robbie Muirhead and Smith up top provide a perfect counter-attacking threat.

The hosts will be gutted to not come away with all three points, but playing more than a third of the game a man down gave them an uphill challenge.

They could have no complaints about the card, although eyebrows were raised by the nine minutes of additional time.

And more questions will be asked of the decision of referee Ryan Lee and VAR David Dickinson at the end.

The contact of Kerr on Moore was outside the box, apparently, while it was also not a clear denial of a goalscoring opportunity, meaning there was no VAR intervention. There will be many who disagree with that review.

What they said

Livingston boss Marvin Bartley: "A real rollercoaster of emotions, but you have to remember who we're playing against. If you'd offered me 2-2 before the game I would have taken it.

"2-0 up we looked pretty comfortable. The turning point was the sending off. The players gave me everything today and that's all I can ask for."

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl: "Disappointed that we didn't take three points.

"We give them the set-plays too easily and then we tried everything. Big compliment to the team, to the supporters who pushed us.

"We showed again our comeback character. Ten games to go and it is an exciting race."

What's next?

Rangers host Celtic next Sunday in a hugely important Old Firm derby (12:00 GMT), while Livingston welcome St Mirren on Saturday (15:00).
