Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola says Marco Rose, who will replace him in the summer, "is a great manager."

The Spaniard says his successor "is someone with a lot of European experience" and that the appointment "looks exciting."

Marco Rose had long been regarded as a potential replacement for Andoni Iraola in the event of the Spaniard deciding to leave Bournemouth.

The Cherries are impressed by Rose's five years of experience leading clubs in the Champions League, as well as his Europa League pedigree.

He has played a role in the development of several leading players, including Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham at Borussia Dortmund and Dominik Szoboszlai at RB Leipzig.

Rose also enjoyed surprise success at Borussia Monchengladbach, qualifying for the Champions League with limited resources.

Those experiences would be key if Bournemouth are to qualify for Europe for the first time. Player trading continues to offset revenue limitations caused by the club's relatively small stadium and commercial income.

It is also a low-risk appointment as Rose is currently without a club, meaning no compensation is required, but it is one they hope will make an immediate impact next season.

Marco Rose is not quite as extreme as Andoni Iraola, as Bournemouth under the Spaniard are one of the most intensively pressing side in the Premier League.

I don't think Rose is that much of an ideologue when it comes to pressing but it's important for him and it's his bedrock.

He was an ordinary journeyman player who was lifted to the Bundesliga level by virtue of finding himself playing under Jurgen Klopp at Mainz and finding himself in a system that elevated players that were not good enough to play at that level.

He managed to play at that level because of the system, effort and organisation superseded everything and brought something that wasn't there individually. But I don't see him quite as committed to that amount of pressing and maybe try to be more measured.

But you can see why Bournemouth have looked at him and thought he is a German version of what that have already.

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke was full of praise for incoming Bournemouth manager Marco Rose earlier today.

Rose will take over as Cherries manager on a three-year contract when Andoni Iraola leaves at the end of the season.

Bournemouth announced last Tuesday that Iraola, 43, would not be signing a new deal at Vitality Stadium.

German manager Rose was one of three candidates considered by the Cherries, along with Ipswich's Kieran McKenna and Rayo Vallecano's Inigo Perez.

The 49-year-old has been without a club since he was sacked by RB Leipzig in March 2025 and has never previously managed in England.

"Everyone at AFC Bournemouth looks forward to welcoming Marco to Vitality Stadium as he begins his role as head coach in the summer," Bournemouth said.

Any suggestion of distraction following last week's announcement that Andoni Iraola would leave Bournemouth was firmly dismissed by his players on Saturday in the 2-1 win against Newcastle.

"If anything, it has made us want us to run harder for him and finish the season off with something special," winger Marcus Tavernier told BBC Match of the Day.

"He has done a lot for this club and players, so it is only right we show him this reaction to finish off with something we can remember for a long time."

Iraola added: "You are always worried because when you give this kind of news, you don't know how everyone is going to react. I trust my players a lot and I know they want to push until the end."

The Spaniard has placed Bournemouth - who have never played continental football - right in the midst of a fierce battle for a place in Europe with a record 13 games unbeaten in the league (W6 D7).

With back-to-back wins against leaders Arsenal and Newcastle, the Cherries are level on 48 points with both Chelsea and Brentford, who sit sixth and seventh in European places.

"I have no clue," Iraola told BBC Radio Solent when asked about his future. "I don't know if I'm going to coach next season. I have no rush to know it. The decision has not been affected by any other club."

But one thing is certain - the 43-year-old is unlikely to be out of work for long.

So the Premier League title race and the relegation fight look likely to go down to the wire this season.

But there is also real chaos happening in the middle of the table as a string of clubs battle for places in Europe and Bournemouth are right in that mix.

We will soon hear from their manager Andoni Iraola, who’s club are now very impressively unbeaten in 13 games and could make their European debut next season but face another summer of big changes.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke: "Of course you have to enjoy it. We look back at one of the best couple of weeks in the modern history of the club. Achieving the FA Cup semi-final and a first away win since deccades at Old Trafford and then to win back-to-back to stay in the league.

"But we have to stay humble and not get carried away with emotions. But it is also important to use this confidence and feel good factor to stay concentrated and keep up the momentum. A lot is achieved but we have to keep going.

“I don’t want to go back to November to be honest. It is nice outside, sun is shining, cherry blossom. It's much nicer in April. But it’s what we expected. We are a newly promoted side. There's always ups and downs.

"But I think we have delivered since day one performance wise. I can’t remember many games where we didn't have the chance to win points. I was never worried, I was always confident in my players.”

Leeds manager Daniel Farke on when Daniel James can return to the team: "He needs session after session. If you have had a year out like DJ, then you need training session after training session.

"We know how much we need him and how important he is. He was and is a key player for me but I also have to adapt a bit to reality. He needs sessions - not one or two. It’s a bit unlucky that he comes back during a period when we don’t have too many sessions due to the games.

"If he then grows session by session, then that is when he is back. It is not dependent on results or when we think we have an easier game. It depends on how he progresses with his body. If you have such an injury CV like he had, then he needs session after session”

Manchester City will head to Hong Kong as part of their pre-season tour in preparation for the 2026-27 season.

City will face Serie A side Inter Milan in a repeat of the 2023 Champions League final at Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday, 1 August.

Pep Guardiola's side previously visited Hong Kong in 2019 when they beat local side Kitchee FC 6-1.

Peter Laundy, senior vice president of the City Football Group, said: "Our fans in Hong Kong and the wider region have always shown incredible loyalty and support for the club.

"The energy and passion we've experienced on previous visits has always been special and we're looking forward to sharing those moments once again with them later in the year, and an exciting fixture against Inter Milan."

Pep Guardiola on whether there is any update on John Stones' future at Manchester City: "No. The only thing I can say is he is back training with us and this is the best news."

The 31-year-old England centre-back is out of contract in the summer.

Stones has endured another injury-interrupted campaign, making just 19 appearances this season and featuring in only three games since November.
