Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, speaking to Amazon Prime, on the saves he made against Sporting: "It's something that I'm there for. I'm trying to help the team as much as possible in any single action, not just defending but commanding and on the ball. So delighted with my performance and, of course, the win."

On his save from Maximiliano Araujo: "I think that's a turning moment. It was a quick transition from them, great strike but I managed to get a fingertip to it to hit the bar. It's one of those moments that can change games."

On his seventh Champions League clean sheet this season: "That's something we've worked on a lot. It's so important for us, those clean sheets make it easier to win games. It showed tonight, scoring in the last minute and keeping that clean sheet decides those type of games."

On if Arsenal can win the Champions League: "We believe 100% that we can win it. We go game by game and show what we can do. I think it is the first time in so many years that we play three quarter-finals in a row. So we just have to focus on the present, that's the most important thing, but of course we have full belief. If you don't believe then you're never going to win it."

The Spaniard leads the way in our poll at the top of this page, with 40% suggesting he is currently the best goalkeeper in the world.

Real Madrid certainly missed Thibaut Courtois against Bayern Munich.

The big Belgian picked up a quad muscle injury during their win over Manchester City in the last round of the Champions League and has not played since.

Courtois at points won Madrid games they had no business winning, I don’t think a goalkeeper has been as good as he is in the Champions League in recent history. It’s hard to say who’s the undeniable best, but Courtois will have the best highlight reel.

    Chris

Courtois. Hands down. Done it over many years and in major games, finals, those things Arsenal struggle in.

    David

I think Courtois is best in the world at the moment and has been for quite a few seasons. Just very unlucky with the defence he has in front of him. But at shot stopping and commanding his six-yard box...the man makes himself HUGE every one-on-one.

    Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich

    Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany knows the job is not yet done and urged his players to maintain their focus for the return leg: "It's important to continue our momentum. They [Real] will give us a tough game, they are the type of team that can do something special, but so can we.

"We have earned the right to be confident and be demanding in those games. But it's football, you never know."

It feels like Bayern Munich have this season readdressed the shortcomings that have derailed their Champions League campaigns of the last five years since their last triumph in 2020. I could see Bayern make it to the Budapest final.

Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane, who returned from an ankle injury to start and scored the German champions' second goal, told TNT Sports: "All the hype around it, coming to Madrid and trying to get a result its always a difficult thing to do. We had some good chances, credit to them they did too. We can be really happy with the win and take it into next week.

"We've enjoyed some really good moments together. We're in the business end of the season now. The more you play and train together the feelings get even stronger. We always feel dangerous we always feel like we can score goals for sure.

"We're in a good position, we have to stay focused. Now it's just about recovering and the time will come next week to try and do the same again."

Manuel Neuer's display for Bayern Munich helped the German champions complete a first victory in Europe against Real Madrid since April 2012.

It ends a run of nine games without a win.

Could this year be the year for Vincent Kompany's side?

I think Raya is incredible, but that performance from Neur last night? At that age?... he will forever be one of the greatest

Raya was amazing yesterday and is a world-class keeper. Also Neuer who is 40 made some incredible saves to keep them ahead in the tie yesterday.

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was one of the many to heap praise on the performance of Manuel Neuer: "He makes it look so easy. With great goalkeepers, they make incredible saves at incredible angles look so easy. He is still very good with his positioning, defending the back line.

"We won't win the competition without more of these kind of performances."

I thought Real Madrid really showed some spirit in the second half and Bayern took their foot off the gas. They made some changes and I think if it wasn't for Manuel Neuer, that game could have ended very differently.

Bayern only win 2-1 because Manuel Neuer played one of the best games he has ever played. That save from Kylian Mbappe after forcing Vinicius Junior wide, that save is probably the best save I have seen all season and the goal Mbappe finally scored, he nearly saved that as well.

I said before the game that there was a little bit of a question mark. He was a little rusty and needed to play well today and my God, did he do that.

Only former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has more starts for a single club in the competition (149).

After making nine saves on Tuesday evening and keeping his side's slender lead in tact, Neuer was named Uefa Player of the Match.

The keeper is part of the back five, the defence, and Arsenal's defence has been arguably the best across Europe for a couple of seasons, with Raya being exceptional throughout that time. His distribution is also very good.

    Bruno

I wasn’t convinced when Raya was picked over Ramsdale, but you have to admit that he’s been key to Arsenal’s recent success. There are plenty of games that could have been losses or draws without him in goal.

  17. Raya 'has a way to go to touch the gloves of Seaman'published at 09:25 BST

    Sporting 0-1 Arsenal

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon was part of a formidable Gunners defence that included England goalkeeper David Seaman.

Dixon believes that David Raya has a way to go to reach Seaman's standard, but has been impressed by the way he commands the Arsenal back line.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast: "Raya is world class. He has a way to go to touch the gloves of David Seaman, but Raya takes complete control of the defenders in front of him and they trust him.

"The save Raya made onto the bar was sensational. He holds his own, his shot-stopping and his feet with the ball. He is calm."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Amazon Prime about David Raya: "He had two moments where he made two big saves. And that's the Champions League, the Champions League is always decided in the boxes because there's so much quality here."

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz scored the winning goal against Sporting, but was lost for words when asked on Amazon Prime to describe the performance of player-of-the-match David Raya: "Unbelievable. I think he is still underestimated in the world of football, but, for me, the last two seasons [he has been] the best keeper in the world. He's outstanding, he's saved us so many times and we're very glad to have him."

  20. Raya leads the way across Europepublished at 09:09 BST

    Sporting 0-1 Arsenal

Right, let's turn our attention to the performance of Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.

He was on fine form against Sporting on Tuesday night in what has been an exceptional season from the Spaniard so far.

The 30-year-old former Brentford goalkeeper has kept the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in Europe's top five leagues, with his 22 across all competitions four clear of Inter's Yann Sommer.

He has become a big presence at Arsenal and is part of the team's leadership group.

Raya's latest clean sheet against Sporting was Arsenal's seventh in the Champions League this season - the most of any goalkeeper and any side in the competition.

He has 15 clean sheets in 31 Premier League matches this season, the most in the division.

After sharing the Golden Glove trophy with Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels in 2024-25, Arsenal will hope that if Raya lifts that personal accolade again, it will mean they have secured silverware as a team too.
