Statement from Vinicius Jr on Instagram (translated from Portuguese): "Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to put their shirts in their mouths to show how weak they are. "But they have the protection of others who, theoretically, have an obligation to punish them. Nothing that happened today is new in my life or in my team's life. "I received a yellow card for celebrating a goal. I still don't understand why. On the other hand, it was just a poorly executed protocol that served no purpose. "I don't like to appear in situations like this, especially after a big win and when the headlines should be about Real Madrid, but it's necessary."

  4. 'First time we've seen this gesture at such an important match'published at 23:12 GMT 17 February

    Clarence Seedorf
Former Real Madrid midfielder on Amazon Prime

I think a lot of people didn't understand what was happening. I think this gesture people should get more awareness about, players, coaches and referees implementing this. Unfortunately, in many stadiums this is still happening.

I think, for him [the referee], the most important part is he gave the time to get everybody to calm down. Because I think it becomes very heated. It's probably the first time we've seen it at this level at such an important match.

It's an educational process. I think everybody should be involved. This is our world, our beautiful game and we have to protect it all together.

  5. 'We have to fight against racism'published at 23:10 GMT 17 February

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid boss Alvaro Arbeloa, speaking to Amazon Prime about the incident with Vinicius Junior: "You have to ask Benfica's players, it is not a question for me."

On if that is because of what is alleged to have been said to Vinicius Jr: "Yes. I think everyone can see what happened with Prestianni. He put his shirt in his mouth and now you have to ask him."

On what Vinicius Jr said to him: "What Vini said is not important. I think we need to fight against racism. It is the most important thing now in football. We support Vini now, of course, and now you have to ask them.

"Of course we have to fight against this type of attitude and to focus on football, but first we have to fight against things like that. We have to fight, especially the footballers. If we don't respect each other it is difficult."

On whether Vinicius Jr needed to be persuaded to come back on: "We spoke with him. He wanted to play, he wanted to help the team. He wanted to continue on the field and we fight until the end."

This is the moment where the game went drastically downhill and the 'ugly' scenes unfolded inside the Estadio da Luz.

Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni covers his mouth whilst staring directly at Real Madrid's goalscorer Vinicius Junior.

Shortly after, Vinicius had informed the referee and walked off the pitch and sat on the Real Madrid bench.

  7. 'It takes the fun out of the game'published at 23:03 GMT 17 February

Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Obviously, it is upsetting. We as people, we come here to do a job.

"We enjoy what we do and when something like that happens it takes the fun out of the game and ruins the night for all of us.

"We dug deep and got the win. Most of all, we are proud of the way we handled it in a hostile environment.

"The way the environment reacted to it didn't affect us. We dug deep."

  8. 'Mourinho shouldn't ever try and justify racist abuse'published at 23:00 GMT 17 February

I think he's [Jose Mourinho] is still emotional. I think he made a big mistake today to justify racial abuse and I'm not saying that was the case today but he mentioned something more than today. He said wherever he goes these things happen, so he's saying it's OK when Vinicius provokes you, that is it OK to be racist and I think that is very wrong.

We should never, ever justify racial abuse. And Vinicius has had enough of that unjustified behaviour from people. And I know Mourinho by heart would agree with me but he expressed himself a bit unfortunate I believe. Because we should not be telling the people at home that someone makes a dance or something then it's OK to be racist.

On what action needs to be taken now:

It's something that cannot be done in months and months, it needs to be dealt with immediately.

  10. 'Where Vinicius plays something happens, always'published at 22:55 GMT 17 February

    FT: Benfica 0-1 Real Madrid

    Benfica

Benfica boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Amazon Prime: "There is something wrong because it happens in every stadium.

"A stadium where Vinicius plays something happens, always.

"Look, I am saying it was a good 50 minutes of football. I believe millions of people are watching around the world – a crazy goal and then game over."

On being shown a red card: "Yes, because I told the referee the truth, but they don't like to listen to the truth."

  11. 'Players should walk off'published at 22:53 GMT 17 February

    Theo Walcott
Former Arsenal forward on Amazon Prime

Players should just walk off, but then they can't because they're expected to be in a space and perform. Until something like that dramatically happens, sadly it's going to be the same.

  12. 'This club, the last thing it is, is racist'published at 22:51 GMT 17 February

    Benfica

More from Benfica boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I saw two completely different things. I want to be independent, and I don't comment about it. I told him [Vinícius] exactly that.

"I told him [Vinicius] - when you score a goal like that you just celebrate and walk back. When he was arguing about racism, I told him the biggest person [Eusebio] in the history of this club was black.

"This club, the last thing that it is, is racist. If in his mind there was something in relation to that – this in Benfica. They [Vinicius and Gianluca Prestianni] told me different things. But I don't believe in one or another. I want to be an independent."

  13. 'So sad abuse like this continues'published at 22:48 GMT 17 February

Former Man Utd striker on Amazon Prime

I think it is so sad in this day and age that we are still having to deal with this and it is an ongoing thing.

Football is a game which bring so much joy, love and passion around the world and we still get highlights like this. Players, allegedly we have to say because we don't know if he has said it or not - that process will take place, but we're still getting this now in football and, as Clarence (Seedorf) said, in the world and society - and it is so sad.

    Benfica

Benfica boss Jose Mourinho, speaking to Amazon Prime: "These talents are able to do these beautiful things, but unfortunately he [Vinicius Junior] was not just happy to score that astonishing goal.

"When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way."

On Vinicius Jr. inciting the crowd: "Yes. I believe so. Then the words that they exchange Gianluca Prestianni with Vinicius I want to be an independent."

  16. 'Vinicius has got a strong mentality'published at 22:39 GMT 17 February

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I don't know if he [Vinicius Junior] took persuading or not [to come back on to the pitch]. I think he wanted to carry on. He has got a strong mentality.

"He has been subject to this a few times throughout his career and he handled it excellently.

"A hostile environment, passionate and clearly upset with the way, maybe the way Vini celebrated. I am not sure what set them off like that. The hostile environment, we are used to it as a team and players."

On what the punishment should be for racial abuse: "That is out of my hands. I think it is a difficult situation. The referee said he did say whatever he did say with his shirt over his mouth. Hopefully there is justice involved with whatever happens."

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I can't comment too much on it as it is an ongoing investigation at this point. I think what has happened tonight is a disgrace to football and overshadowed the performance as well after an amazing goal.

"Vini has been subject to this a few times throughout his career. To ruin a night like this for our team is a disgrace. No place for it in football or society. It is disgusting."

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid boss Alvaro Arbeloa, speaking to Amazon Prime, about what happened: "You have to ask Benfica's players, it is not a question for me. I think everyone can see what happened. What Vini said is not important. What can I say? Of course we have to fight against this type of attitude. If we don't respect each other then that is a problem."

    FT: Benfica 0-1 Real Madrid

    Clarence Seedorf
Former Real Madrid midfielder on Amazon Prime

I think that the fact that Vini has been troubled for many years now in a very bad way in Spain that we cannot hide. We need to make clear that there's no justification for racist abuse - there's no space for it.
