Dundee United captain Ross Graham headed in an own goal as Dundee struck twice in stoppage time to rescue an unlikely and dramatic derby draw at Dens Park.

Ashley Hay prodded in from close range on 94 minutes before Graham glanced the ball into his own net from a free-kick he had given away with a terrible challenge.

The goal sparked wild celebrations from the home players and fans, and effectively ended United's slim hopes of making the Scottish Premiership's top six.

United led through an Amar Fatah spot-kick and a Luca Stephenson header, with the breakthrough coming early in the second half when home captain Simon Murray was punished for handball from a pass that was heading away from the penalty area.

United now sit nine points behind sixth-placed Falkirk with three games before the split, while Dundee stay two points behind their city rivals.

The visitors missed a golden early chance when Iurie Iovu headed over the top from just a couple of yards.

With the action thundering from end to end, Dundee came close when a Cameron Congreve cross took a deflection and goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer had to claw the ball away from under his crossbar.

In response, Fatah burst into the penalty box before his shot was repelled by Jon McCracken.

Congreve and Tony Yogane were menacing on the wings for the hosts and the latter cut inside to thrash an effort on target, only for defender Krisztian Keresztes to get his head in the way.

The impressive Fatah had three chances in quick succession, forcing two stops from McCracken in between hooking an effort into the side-netting.

The visiting goalkeeper then made a fabulous fingertip save to keep out a fierce, rising strike from Vicko Sevelj.

Soon after Fatah had stroked in the penalty, Sevelj fired narrowly wide.

The visitors were well worth a two-goal lead when Stephenson thumped in a back-post header from a sumptuous Will Ferry delivery.

Johnny Russell, who last played in this fixture in December 2012, almost added a third, with McCracken showing great reflexes to push away a powerful shot from the substitute.

That tremendous save was to prove vital as Steven Pressley's side pulled off a remarkable escape act in the closing moments, replacement striker Hay helping the ball over the line from a corner and then on the receiving end of Graham's dangerous tackle that led to the equaliser.

Analysis: Dundee delight as United draw again

This was a real smash and grab job, with Dundee a distant second best for 93 of the 96 minutes.

But they kept going, belief buoyed by the huge strides made in the second half of the season.

Hay played a big role in the dramatic comeback, although McCracken was the real hero, with several excellent stops.

The keeper was even the closest Dundee player to Graham when he knocked in the own goal, perhaps spooking the centre-half with his presence in a busy penalty box.

United will find the result hard to stomach as they drew for the 13th time this season - a league high.

Playing in support of striker Max Watters, Fatah was a box of tricks in the first half and could have had a hat-trick before he converted the penalty.

Sevelj also added dynamism in midfield after a stint in the back three.

The final outcome may pile more pressure on boss Jim Goodwin but that seems harsh in isolation since this was one of United's best showings of the campaign and they really should have wrapped up the points.

What the managers said

Dundee head coach Steven Pressley: "We played reasonably well for the first 35 minutes without being dominant or truly ourselves. Then for 55 minutes we looked a shadow of ourselves.

"But we have scored so many late goals over this period and there's a great determination about this group of players. They deal well with adversity and have that never-say-die attitude.

"Although there were certain aspects I wasn't overly pleased with, the one thing that can never be questioned is that will and that grit."

Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin: "The way we finished the game pretty much sums up the season for us. It's the reason why we find ourselves in the bottom half of the table.

"Defensively, we've just not been good enough, all campaign. In those moments when we get put under a bit of pressure, too many times we've crumbled.

"It's one of the most one-sided Dundee derbies I can remember. I probably would have been disappointed to only finish 2-0, given the opportunities that we had.

"Even at 2-0 we should have enough experience and enough leadership on the park to manage the game better to see it through."

What next?
