The owners of Wigan Athletic say they are "exploring" options to bring additional investment into the club.

Local businessman Mike Danson, who owns Super League club Wigan Warriors, took over the Latics in the summer of 2023.

In a statement, external, the ownership group said they were open to a range of options, including a full sale "if the right party came forward with the right commitment to the club and the town".

Wigan are 20th in League One after a 3-0 home defeat by Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday, only outside the relegation zone on goal difference as they try to avoid slipping into the fourth tier for the first time since 1997.

"Since acquiring the club in 2023, our priority has been to stabilise Wigan Athletic after a period of significant turmoil, and we are proud of the progress made," the statement added.

"Earlier this year, the Danson family took the decision to explore options for bringing additional investment into the club to support its long-term ambitions. This was a decision taken by the ownership, not the wider board.

"What we can say clearly is this: we will not hand this club to anyone who does not share our commitment to its stability, its community role, and its future.

"The Danson family remains fully engaged in the day-to-day running of the club, and that will not change unless and until we are satisfied that any new investment or ownership would be in the best interests of Wigan Athletic."

Danson's arrival came after a tumultuous period during which the club went into administration in 2020 and later changed ownership.

Major financial issues continued to plague the club, however, with the Latics served a winding-up petition by His Majesty's Revenue and Customs prior to Danson's takeover.

The club were docked eight points for the 2023-24 season due to breaching EFL financial rules but finished in 12th position.

A 15th-placed finish followed last season but the club have struggled so far during the 2025-26 campaign and are in the midst of a battle against relegation.

Former boss Ryan Lowe was sacked after 11 months in charge last month, with Gary Caldwell returning for a second spell as head coach.
