Askey hails 'remarkable' Truro win over Sutton

John Askey has described Truro's 3-0 win at Sutton United as a "remarkable" performance.

The victory ended a nine-game winless run in the National League where the bottom-of-the-table Tinners had picked up just one point.

The win was just their second away win since being promoted to the National League for the first time almost a year ago.

"To come here and put a performance on like they have done is remarkable," Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall after the win.

"I would have said it could have even been six, the chances that we had.

"You felt as though we were due a win, how we've been playing, but we created a lot of chances and I'm just really pleased for the players because they gave it everything they've got and today just shows that we're not that short of where we need to be."

Truro's poor recent form has all but ended hopes they have of staying in the National League for a second season.

They have closed the gap to safety to nine points, but have just seven games left and are six points behind their nearest rivals.

City host 15th-placed Solihull Moors on Wednesday before fourth-placed Boreham Wood come to the Truro Community Stadium on Saturday.

"You've got to keep going," said Askey, who could only name five substitutes as his side has been hit by injuries.

"You just move on to the next one and just see what we can get on Wednesday.

"I'm just really pleased for the players who've been putting in the effort they have and got some reward."

He added: "We've been so close and you can't say that players were playing without confidence because of the football that we were playing and we were in every game.

"It's just been those little moments at both ends really where we've been been lacking, but today we weren't - so as regards [to] belief for the ones who've played - we go into Wednesday's game now a little bit more buoyed than if we'd have come here and not got a result."
