Burton Albion boss Gary Bowyer says striker Jake Beesley's goal in their win at Northampton Town was a reward for his hard work in training.

Beesley is the Brewers' top scorer this season, with 13 league goals, but had not found the net in his previous seven matches.

Bowyer told BBC Radio Derby: "I spoke to him the other day and he was saying he hadn't scored in however many games.

"But he came in this week and worked extra hard and that was his way of dealing with it."

Beesley has scored more league goals in his debut season for Burton than he managed in four years at previous club Blackpool.

But a productive December and January had been followed by a relatively fallow February, with only two goals against bottom side Port Vale to show for seven appearances in all competitions.

He also went goalless in early March, against Exeter and Stevenage, before ending the mini drought at Northampton on Saturday.

"I'm delighted for him," Bowyer said.

"He got his reward for perseverance and pride in his own performance. The rest of them then stepped up with it as well

"Bees said to me afterwards, 'I should have had a hat-trick'."

Burton are at home to Reading on Tuesday evening.
