  1. Bad light stops playpublished at 16:05 BST

    Northants v Middx 353-3 (lead by 285)

I did tell you it might not be gripping. One over, one run, one light meter - and off we go.

The players are trudging off. The umpires are out in the middle. No decision made yet on the future of this game.

  2. Play resumes at Northamptonpublished at 16:02 BST

    Northants v Middx 352-3 (lead by 284)

This may not be the most interesting session of cricket there has ever been.

But please stick with us. You never know, something may happen.

Calvin Harrison is bowling. Leus de Plooy is batting.

  3. Warwickshire seamers win it for the Bearspublished at 16:00 BST

Warks beat Essex by 41 runs

    Grace Ballinger
The Blaze and Manchester Super Giants seamer

I feel like I've sung the Warwickshire seam attacks praises plenty today, but that was a seriously special performance.

They've been fired up since Barker's three-wicket over this morning, and they've dominated most of the game.

It also seems fitting that Sam Hain took the winning catch, after his essential 88 not out in the first innings.

I may be biased as a seamer myself, but does anyone else think lower-scoring games dominated by the bowlers are the best sort of fixtures?

WARWICKSHIRE WIN BY 41 RUNSpublished at 15:50 BST
    Breaking

Warks v Essex 164 all out

What a way for Warwickshire to win for the first time this season!

With the field spread, Zaman Akhter decides he wants to ramp Beau Webster - and although he gets a decent bat on it, it's not enough and Sam Hain runs round to complete the catch.

Victory by 41 runs on a remarkable final day at Edgbaston.

Webster finished it off, but it was all started by Keith Barker's triple-wicket-maiden in the second over of the day.

Essex tried to steady the ship and Akhter, together with Simon Harmer, almost got them close after a brilliant 51-run partnership, but the damage had been done.

Warks v Essex 164-9 - 42 more runs to win

Jamie Porter is untroubled by the final two Keith Barker deliveries.

Zaman Akhter will face Beau Webster, once again with a spread field.

  6. Postpublished at 15:45 BST

Warks v Essex 164-9 - 42 more runs to win

Warwickshire have a slip in place, and eight fielders on the boundary. This cat-and-mouse of 'We'll let you have the single', 'Well we don't want it', might last a while.

That's evidenced by the fact Akhter smears one to a fielder on the mid-wicket boundary and just stands there.

He does take a single from the fourth delivery of the over.

Those eight fielders now come in.

  7. Tea at Northamptonpublished at 15:45 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 352-3 - lead by 284

Tea has been taken at Northampton and we will be back for the conclusion of this one in 20 minutes for what looks destined to be a draw.

Middlesex captain Leus de Plooy (65 not out) and Ben Geddes (0 not out) will return for the final session on day four after Sam Robson was eventually dismissed for a wonderful 162 after over six and a half hours in total at the crease - extraordinary.

What a day it has been across the County Championship this afternoon.

  8. Robson departs for 162published at 15:44 BST

    Middlesex 351-3, lead by 283

    Grace Ballinger
The Blaze and Manchester Super Giants seamer

    Finally a wicket for Northants!

Guthrie bowls a sharp back-of-a-length delivery after being hit for back-to-back boundaries and Robson is caught down the leg-side by the keeper after an excellent 162.

A welcome breakthrough for Northants, it had started to look like middle-practise for the Middlesex top order.

  9. Postpublished at 15:44 BST

    Northants v Middlesex 352-3

Big appeal for caught down the leg side by Northants and James Sales is up, as is the slip cordon.

Umpire shakes his head however, not out. Ben Geddes (0 not out) remains at the crease.

  10. Postpublished at 15:43 BST

Warks v Essex 163-9 - 43 more runs to win

Simon Harmer negotiates the final five balls of Beau Webster's over.

The penultimate one had Essex hearts in mouths - it was a bouncer, angled in at the chest, and he fended it away with his gloves, to safety.

Harmer's push into the off side from the final delivery does not elicit a run from Akhter, who is happy to save the strike for himself.

    Harmer c Yates b Webster 32 (Essex 163-9 v Warks, 43 to win)

Beau Webster strikes! Rob Yates takes a fine low catch at slip to remove Simon Harmer.

The partnership is over. It was worth 51 valuable runs.

Jamie Porter is the last man.

  12. A win for Somerset and a century for Abellpublished at 15:37 BST

Somerset beat Hampshire by two wickets

    Grace Ballinger
The Blaze and Manchester Super Giants seamer

A characteristic boundary through mid-wicket wins it for Somerset and also brings up Tom Abell's century. A fitting way to welcome victory.

An excellent century on a difficult pitch against a strong Hampshire bowling attack. He anchored the innings with style and poise, and it felt as long as Tom Abell was at the crease, Somerset had the win.

Somerset now sit comfortably top of the County Championship and certainly look the side to beat in the top division.

  13. Postpublished at 15:37 BST

Warks v Essex 163-8 - 43 more runs to win

Zaman Akhter, on his Essex debut, is looking every inch the top 7 batter right now, not a number 10.

His footwork is looking sharp, his defence is present and correct. He's happy to drive the full deliveries.

Of course, as I type that, he goes for a swish off Keith Barker and misses.

    Another maiden.

    Robson c McManus b Guthrie 162 (Northants v Middlesex 351-3 - lead by 283)

A stunning innings comes to an incredible end!

Sam Robson, who has put on a wonderful 162 which has comes off 305 balls, gloves a short delivery down the leg side from Liam Guthrie.

It looks to be going for a 22nd four of Robson's innings but somehow Northants wicket-keeper Lewis McManus flings himself spectacularly to his left to make an incredible one-handed take.

What a moment. Robson is rightly applauded as he enters the pavilion.

New man in for Middlesex, Ben Geddes.

  15. Postpublished at 15:33 BST

Beau Webster bowls a maiden. Another 39 of those and we'd have a draw.

  16. Postpublished at 15:30 BST

Warks v Essex 163-8 - 43 more runs to win

Simon Harmer scrambles a single off Keith Barker. The rest of the over is uneventful.

A mottled pattern of white and grey clouds, with patches of blue, hang above Edgbaston. But metaphorically, they are a lot darker for the home side.

  17. 50 partnershippublished at 15:26 BST

Warks v Essex 162-8 - 44 more runs to win

Another boundary for Zaman Akhter! And that takes this valuable ninth-wicket partnership to 50. Akhter has 34 of them.

Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard gathers his brains trust together. Something needs to happen for them soon.

  18. 150 for Sam Robsonpublished at 15:23 BST

    Northants v Middx 339-2 (lead by 271)

Sam Robson continues to motor on and his latest boundary - the 19th of his innings - takes him past 150.

  19. SOMERSET WIN BY TWO WICKETSpublished at 15:22 BST
    Breaking

    Hants v Somerset 288-8 (target 287)

What a way to do it! Tom Abell whips one away for four to move onto 101 not out and Somerset have won an absolute thriller at the Utilita Bowl!

An absolutely superb match of County Championship cricket.

It is fitting that Abell scores the winning runs to move onto a century with the final delivery as he remained stoic in Somerset's run chase - losing partners throughout their second-innings.

A match that swung both ways several times over the past four days.

Abell ends up as the hero for the Division One league-leaders, who extend their lead at the top of the table, picking up 20 points. How vital could today be when we look back at the end of the season?

Spare a thought for Sonny Baker who grabbed 5-42 - and gave Hampshire a real fighting chance of what, at most of today, looked an unlikely victory.

His excellent spell - dismissing Somerset captain Lewis Gregory and then Alfie Ogborne - meant this match went right to the wire in a stunning conclusion.

    Long live County Cricket!

Hope England don’t make the same mistake ignoring the Rew brothers that they did with Hildreth, Gregory and Abell. Just because they don’t play for a county in the West of London…

    Matt, Northampton

I can only see one change in the 1-7 with Crawley having a rest. McKinney in pole position for me. But the bowling is up for grabs. One or two pace bowlers and a spin bowler needed. Sonny Baker is throwing his hat in the ring today.
