It didn't come as too much of a surprise that Tyson Fury dominated yesterday's news conference.

Arslanbek Makhmudov appeared happy to take a backseat and even spent large periods scrolling on his phone as Fury veered off on a range of topics.

Fury described himself as "speedy, skilful, handsome and destructive".

"I've never lost my speed of reactions. I've still got it - 100%," Fury added. "I'm looking for as good a performance as it can be after [nearly] 16 months out. I must have done 500 rounds of sparring to prepare."

On paper, Fury is a massive favourite here. Makhmudov’s last win was against the British cult hero Dave Allen, but does that really make him a world-class threat to the 'The Gypsy King?'

It probably explains why the atmosphere feels a bit flat this week. The stadium isn't a sell-out yet and the usual Fury frenzy isn't quite the same.

If he were facing a big British name - or even someone who’d actually fire back some insults during media events - we might have seen a bit more spark in the build-up.

Tyson Fury was also asked whether SugarHill Steward has been training him: "He's been overseeing - that's what he does. Even when he's in Miami he's phoning me and overseeing what I do. We go back to 2009 - probably before that."

On what his return is going to bring: "It has been four years since I've boxed in England and I can't wait to get in there and put a show on for my people.

"I've got to bring the glory days back."

  8. 'I've got Easter eggs waiting in the fridge'published at 19:18 BST 10 April

    Fury v Makhmudov

Tyson Fury: "I'm happy to be back in central London, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, full of Brits and fighting a big Russian.

    "It's a surreal moment again."

On how difficult it is to come out of retirement again: "A little bit harder. I'm getting older - Father Time waits for no one - but I've still got a bit left in the tank.

"I'm not retiring again until after the fight. My priority at the moment is to beat this guy and eat the Easter eggs I've got in the fridge.

"Whoever has the belts I want to get them back. I was undefeated for 17 years and took it for granted. I had two losses in a row and I'm not the hunted now but I'm the hunter. It feels great to be the young fresh hunter again.

"I want to make a statement so I've come in nice and light and lean."

    It's face-off time.

We've seen Tyson Fury tickle Arslanbek Makhmudov earlier in the year and the Russian gave Fury a bear hug yesterday.

They look at each other for seven seconds and then Fury, wearing a generic black NFL shirt with 'Fury 1' on the back, turns to show that to the crowd.

Arslanbek Makhmudov is back in England for the second time after beating Dave Allen in his last bout in October.

The Russian weighed 18st 6lb (117kg) for that contest - 1st 9lb (10kg) lighter than Tyson Fury weighed when he stepped on the scales before his last fight against Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024.

Makhmudov's career-heavy weight was 19st (121kg) when he faced Ricardo Brown in June 2025.

One of the great pre-fight mysteries is always what version of Tyson Fury is under that shirt.

He's never been a guy whose performance depends on a shredded physique or a specific number on the scales. You're just never going to see a ripped Fury with a six-pack, and he's the first to tell you that.

Still, the scales don't lie about preparation. After 15 months out of the ring, the number tonight will be a massive clue as to whether he's been living in the gym or enjoying his time off a little too much.

Tyson Fury's decision to weigh in fully clothed in his last bout - the rematch with Oleksandr Usyk - means we can't fully trust the career-heavy 20st 1lb (127kg) that was announced.

His previous heaviest was when he fought former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou in 2023.

For context, here are his three previous weights:

    • Fury v Usyk 1 - 18st 7lb (117kg)
    • Fury v Ngannou - 19st 9lb (124kg)
    • Fury v Chisora - 19st 2lb (122kg)

Tyson Fury weighed a career-heavy 20st 1lb (127kg) when we last saw him weigh in for his rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in 2024.

But Fury was fully clothed - leather jacket included - when he stepped on to the scales, so that weight wasn't fully representative of where he was at.

It will be interesting to see where he's at for this weekend's contest after 15 months of inactivity, although he has been training in the warm climate of Thailand.
