Tidemark
Edinburgh Fringe Experience 2004
Thursday 5 August 2004
Day
2 of the Tidemark Theatre Edinburgh Festival Fringe Experience and
amazingly not only is the weather fabulous, but the flying ants
have gone! Hurrah!
It's
preview week for the Fringe, which doesn't officially start until
August 8th, so the big crowds haven't arrived yet.
Despite
this, however, audience figures for the first preview performance
of 'Odysseus and the Really Freaky Monsters' were exceptional.
With
the build up to the start of the Olympic games in Athens next week
and the release of the Hollywood blockbuster 'Troy', together with
the happy coincidence that many junior schools have been studying
'The Odyssey', mean that 'Odysseus' was an inspired choice for Tidemark's
2004 children's show and we have started off better than we could
have hoped for.
Tickets
for Tidemark's adult show, 'Delicates and Smoke' have also started
selling reasonably well - in previous years our first show has opened
to empty houses so nine people in the audience was also a great
start!
And
let's face it, monologues which explore the mental state of a mother
with Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy and a serial arsonist who also
happens to be a fireman aren't everybody's idea of fun, are they?
So
- publicity is what we need now.
The
fantastic people in the Pleasance press office are constantly on
the look out for headline grabbing stories or links to celebrities
(no matter how tenuous) to try to build-up ticket sales.
OK
then! Tenuous celebrity links we can do! How about Alan Rickman
for starters?! His brother David, printed our company t-shirts!
Really! That's got to be worth some column inches hasn't it?
Actually,
David Rickman passed on copies of our production flyers to his younger
brother with a note inviting him along to see one of our shows.
Well,
fair's fair. I've seen Alan in countless shows over the years and
'Truly, Madly deeply' is one of the most watched dvd's in our house
- alongside 'The Fimbles' that is - so isn't it about time Monsieur
Rickman came to see me in something?
Mmmm,
well we'll see, but in the meantime I shall try to console myself
with the thought that some of our company flyers may well be in
Alan Rickman's bin as I write.
Believe
me, I know many companies who would kill to have their flyers in
his bin so excuse me while I savour the momentÂ…
