Former Peterborough United and Swindon Town boss Mark Cooper has been appointed as the new manager of non-league Chelmsford City.

He will work alongside John Still, who has been named as head of football after recently leaving a similar role at National League club Southend United.

Cooper was sacked by Yeovil Town last August after almost three years in charge.

"Mark is a proven winner, with a wealth of experience across the Football League and National League, and a track record of building competitive, promotion-chasing sides," said Chelmsford owner/chairman Spencer Gore.

"His teams are known for their identity, organisation, and ability to deliver results - qualities that are fully aligned with our ambitions as a football club."

Chelmsford are 10th in National League South, having recently parted company with Cooper's predecessor Angelo Harrop, and cannot reach the play-offs with only one game left to play this season.

Gore bought a majority stake in the club in 2024 and set a goal of reaching the English Football League but they have not yet been able to take the step up to the top tier of non-league football.

"Mark will work closely with our wider football structure, including John Still as head of football, to ensure we are aligned in how we identify, recruit, and develop players capable of taking this club forward.

"Together, we are building a football operation designed for success."

On the appointment of 75-year-old Still, Gore said: "John is a name that commands enormous respect across the game. With decades of experience, multiple promotions, and a proven track record of building successful teams, his appointment represents a major step forward for this football club

He added: "John will play a key role in shaping the future of our squad, identifying talent, and helping us create a team capable of delivering sustained success.

"We are not here to stand still. We are here to build."
