FA Cup: QPR 2-0 Portsmouth highlights
QPR claimed a comfortable win over Portsmouth to reach the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 1997.
Darnell Furlong went closest in the first half of Tuesday night's replay, heading against the Pompey crossbar.
Wells then fired wide before Matt Smith headed down from a corner for Wells to bundle in for the Championship side.
And Smith rose to head home from a Luke Freeman corner to end League One Pompey's hopes, giving the Hoops their first win in five games.
Smith headed wide from an early Furlong cross and both Massimo Luongo and Freeman fired off target before Furlong went close.
Wells and Freeman fired wide after the break, with Gareth Evans going closest for Pompey as he fired wide for the visitors.
But moments later Joel Lynch helped on Smith's header for on-loan Burnley striker Wells to break the deadlock with his eighth goal of the season.
And Smith headed home to secure a fifth-round tie at home to Watford on Friday, 15 February.
'We've a chance to create memories' - what they said
QPR boss Steve McClaren: "Portsmouth made it difficult for us. We earned the right to play, though, and once we got the first goal it opened up for us and we got the job done.
"We put in a very good performance tonight. It took us a while to break them down but I'm delighted. The main thing is to create a team the fans are proud of and I think tonight they will be.
"Now we have a great tie to look forward to against Watford here, under the lights. The FA Cup is all about creating memories and we've an opportunity to do that."
Pompey boss Kenny Jackett: "We competed well but couldn't really get any shots away until a bit of a flurry towards the end. Ultimately it was two set-pieces that cost us - the three goals they've scored across the two ties have all come from them.
"It was a spirited performance and over these two games we've shown we're difficult to beat. We've had a good cup run and while there's some frustration at going out of the competition, we have to look forward now."
McClaren ends his Pompey hoodoo - the stats
As a manager in all competitions, Steve McClaren had faced Portsmouth more often than any other side without winning (D4 L3).
QPR have won two FA Cup games this season, as many as they had managed in their previous 26 games in the competition (D7 L17).
