Torres scored his first league goal since the final game of last season
Fernando Torres scored his first La Liga goal of the season as Atletico Madrid moved up to second with victory over Alaves.
The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker, 33, grabbed the winner just minutes after coming off the bench, sliding in Sime Vrsaljko's cross.
It was Atletico's fourth league win in a row and moves them to within three points of leaders Barcelona.
Valencia started the day second but lost 2-1 at Eibar.
It was a second defeat in three matches for Valencia after having gone 14 league games unbeaten from the start of the season.
Barcelona have a game in hand at the top and face Deportivo La Coruna at the Nou Camp on Sunday, while fourth-placed Real Madrid will also be playing catch-up after beating Gremio in Saturday's Club World Cup final.
