An annual Christmas pub crawl. known as SantaCon, went ahead in New York City despite attempts by some residents to close it down.

SantaCon involves revellers dressing in festive costume and heading for the bars, but some say it has become too rowdy.

Organisers say SantaCon celebrates Christmas traditions of festive dress and good cheer - and also raises tens of thousands of dollars for charity.

According to SantaCon.info, the annual pub crawl is held in 380 cities across the US and in 51 countries.

London is one city that has caught the SantaCon bug, with thousands of "Santas" thronging Trafalgar Square on Friday night.
