Paul Thomas Anderson’s film has won six Oscars tonight including the night’s biggest prize, having looked like the frontrunner in this category for a while.

The dark comedy action thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti.

It had the second-largest haul of nominations this year with 13, while Sinners got a record-breaking 16.

DiCaprio plays a revolutionary battling an authoritarian US regime, whose past comes back to haunt him when his daughter goes missing, in this twisty, cinematically-beautiful film.

Anderson has hit the jackpot after 14 Oscar nominations, and this year marked his fourth best picture nod. Time to get the champagne out!

  3. Jessie Buckley is the first Irish star to win best actresspublished at 02:31 GMT 16 March

She’s done it! Jessie Buckley is the first Irish actress to win this category, having been a strong frontrunner for quite some time.

She gives a powerful, heart-wrenching portrayal of William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes in the film, based on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell. It explores the family’s grief when one of their three children, Hamnet, dies aged 11, and how this could be the tragic origins for one of the writer’s greatest plays - Hamlet.

Buckley got her big break in 2008 after she came second in BBC One talent show I’d Do Anything, in the search to find an actress to play Nancy in a West End adaptation of Oliver Twist.

I remember interviewing her just before the show’s final, when she was just 17 - even back then, her drive and talent burned bright, and she was obviously destined for bigger things.

”I want this so much I literally would do anything to win,” she told me. “When something feels so right you just have to go in fighting for it.”

"My dad came in from Ghana to be here... my family are here," Jordan says, clearly feeling a little overwhelmed after winning best actor.

He runs through a list of everyone he wants to thank (we don't think he can have missed anyone out!)

"I stand here because of the people who came before me," he says, listing off names including Sidney Poitier, Halle Berry and Will Smith among others.

"Thank you for keeping betting on me and I'll keep stepping up. Everyone at home who went to see the movie... you guys made this movie what it is."

  6. Michael B Jordan looks shell-shocked at winning best actorpublished at 02:25 GMT 16 March

He’s only gone and done it!

The coveted best actor race was one of the strongest and tightest in recent memory. This win makes him the second person in Oscars history to have won for playing twins (Lee Marvin was the first for his role in 1965 comedy western Cat Ballou).

Jordan portrays twin brothers Smoke and Stack in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, his third collaboration with the director.

The pair return home to Mississippi having worked for Al Capone in Chicago, and have big plans to open a juke joint in their home town but soon find themselves battling against an evil force.

Jordan imbues each brother with individual personalities that play off each other, also subtly changing his movements and voice to make the distinction.

The Black Panther star has been getting a lot of love on the awards circuit, most notably at the recent Actor Awards where he won the same prize but tonight was never a given. Which makes this seismic win all the more satisfying.

The other contenders in this category were:

    • Timothée Chalamet - Marty Supreme
    • Leonardo DiCaprio - One Battle After Another
    • Ethan Hawke - Blue Moon
    • Michael B Jordan - Sinners
    • Wagner Moura - The Secret Agent
  7. Paul Thomas Anderson says the Academy 'make a guy work hard for one of these'published at 02:24 GMT 16 March

A clearly emotional Paul Thomas Anderson has collected his Oscar for One Battle After Another, referencing his 14 nominations before finally getting on the winners' podium.

"You make a guy work hard for one of these, I really appreciate it," he says.

He says it was an honour to be nominated among his classmates - the other nominees in his category.

The director jokingly adds: "There will always be some doubt in your heart that you deserve it, but there is no question at the pleasure of having it for myself!"

He says he is there because "of people's faith and time for me".

  11. Audience holds up lightbulbs during Kpop Demon Hunters performancepublished at 02:16 GMT 16 March

The audience at the Oscars was quite literally lit up during the performance of Golden from KPop Demon Hunters.

It's because everyone was holding a lightbulb. The lightbulb on a stick is a signature of Kpop concerts across the world.

The track has just gone on to win best original song.

Train Dreams is the tenth and final nominee for best picture.

The film is set in the Pacific North West in the early 20th Century, at a time of huge change industrially and socially.

An American railroad worker and logger lives an itinerant existence before marrying and having a daughter but returns home from a work trip only to be confronted by tragedy.

Based on the novella of the same name by Denis Johnson, Train Dreams a quiet and contemplative journey through one unassuming man’s life, starring Joel Edgerton as leading man Robert Grainger.

Directed by Clint Bentley, it also stars Felicity Jones and Kerry Condon. Condon, best known for The Banshees of Inisherin, also stars in another of this year's best picture nominee, F1.

Many critics have highlighted the influence of enigmatic US filmmaker Terrence Malick on Train Dreams, with its huge painterly American landscapes, narrative voiceover and poetic style.

  14. Norway celebrates its first win for international feature film for Sentimental Valuepublished at 02:11 GMT 16 March

    Helen Bushby
    Culture reporter

This is Norway's first Oscar win after seven nominations. Its director Joachim Trier says his film, Sentimental Value, is about "a very dysfunctional family".

"I make films to feel at home," he says, adding this is exactly how he felt with the crew, and how proud he was of the cast as well.

He goes on to quote American writer and civil rights activist James Baldwin, saying he "makes us remember all adults are responsible for all children - let's not vote for politicians who don't take this seriously into account".

In a political moment in a ceremony which was relatively light on political comments, Javier Bardem presented the award and shouted: "No to war" and "Free Palestine."

Aside from the odd joke from Conan O'Brien, the focus has mostly been on the films tonight.

Sentimental Value, the Norwegian family drama directed by Joachim Trier has triumphed against some other strong contenders including Brazil’s The Secret Agent.

It had nine nominations and won the equivalent category at last month’s Baftas, which has been a good indicator of late - five of the past six Bafta winners have gone on to win the Academy Award for best international feature.

This quiet and intelligent film stars Stellan Skarsgård as a veteran egotistical film director (Gustav), the father of two grown-up daughters, played by Renate Reinsve (Nora) and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Agnes).

He struggles to connect with them due to latent family trauma which plays out as he tries to make his comeback movie.

We have just heard Golden from Netflix's animation K-Pop Demon Hunters.

In a break from tradition, only two of the nominees in the best original song category have been performed live on stage at this year's Oscars: hot favourite Golden, and I Lied to You from Sinners.

Diane Warren, who is up for a record 17th nod in this category without a win has been critical of the decision, telling Deadline: “It is unfair to me and my fellow nominees because you just excluded three songs and chose two.

"It is my fellow artists who deserve the respect which comes from a nomination… Put all the songs on. It is all of us or none of us, and that is what it should be."

The Academy has cited time constraints for the decision, saying that each nominated song will be introduced in a segment with footage of the film it was made for, and will feature behind-the-scenes footage of the song-writing process.

So of course, they all do.
