Where are you, Ben?

Ben
I’m at the bus stop!

Clare
แย่แล้วค่ะ เบนยังอยู่ที่ป้ายรถเมล์หรือ ‘bus stop’

Sam
Oh dear. While we wait, let’s talk about what ‘at’ means here. Ben said ‘I’m at the bus stop’.

Clare
Yes! ‘At’ ใช้เพื่อบอกว่าคุณอยู่ที่ไหน หรือเดินทางถึงที่ไหนสักแห่งแล้วนะคะ ซึ่งเบนบอกว่า ‘at the bus stop’ คืออยู่ที่ป้ายรถเมล์นั่นเองค่ะ

นอกจากนี้ ถ้ามีใครมาเคาะประตูเราก็พูดว่า...

Someone’s at the door! Ben, is that you? Let me call him again!

Ben, where are you?

Ben
I’m on the bus. 

Clare
เขาบอกว่า ‘on the bus’ ซึ่งเราใช้ ‘on’ กับการโดยสารพาหนะบางชนิด

Sam
Yes, we use ‘on’ for bicycles, buses, trains, planes, ships… But, careful, because we use ‘in’ for cars and taxis.

Clare
และเราใช้ ‘on’ เพื่อบอกว่าบางสิ่งอยู่ด้านบนด้วยค่ะ คือ in contact with and supported by a surface. For example, your cup of coffee Sam is…

Sam
It’s on the table.

And my feet are on the floor.

And we are on the 6th floor…and Ben is not… Let me call him again.

Sam
Ben, you’re so late. Where are you?

Ben
I’m in the office. But where is everyone? Where are you?

Sam
Oh, Ben! Which building did you go to?

Clare
Oh no! ฟังดูเหมือนว่าเบน จะไปผิดตึกนะคะ และเขาบอกว่า ‘in the office’ ซึ่งเราใช้ ‘in’ สำหรับการอยู่ใน enclosed or surrounded by something else, like having walls around you.

Sam
Exactly! We are ‘in the studio’, ‘in a building’, Ben is ‘in the wrong office’, and my coffee is ‘in my cup’. ‘At’, ‘on’ and ‘in’ can be confusing words because we use them to talk about time, as well…

ใช่ค่ะ แต่วันนี้ เราจะพูดถึงแค่การใช้บอกตำแหน่งที่คุณอยู่นะคะ ดังนั้น ต้องมีคำกริยา ‘be’ หลังจากประธานในประโยคด้วยค่ะ

Sam
Now, the pronunciation isn’t difficult, but it’s still useful to practise. We usually put more importance on the words after ‘at’, ‘on’ and ‘in’. Like this – repeat after me:

I’m at the bus stop.
I’m on the bus.
I’m in the office.

ให้จินตนาการว่าอยู่ในลิฟต์ ‘the lift’ จะบอกว่าอย่างไรคะ
ขึ้นต้นประโยคว่า ‘I’m…’ แล้วเติมคำบุพบทไว้ก่อนหน้า ‘the lift’ นะคะ จากนั้นรอเปรียบเทียบคำตอบกับเสียงแซมค่ะ:

Sam
I’m in the lift.

Did you say the same as Sam? ต่อไปให้บอกว่าอยู่บนรถไฟ จะใช้คำบุพบทอะไรก่อนหน้า ‘the train’ ดีคะ พูดแล้วรอฟังเฉลยจากแซมนะคะ:

Sam
I’m on the train.

พูดเหมือนกันไหมคะ Well done! ต่อไปสมมุติว่าได้รับโทรศัพท์จากพนักงานประชาสัมพันธ์ที่อาคาร ว่าเพื่อนมาถึงตามนัดตอนเที่ยง คิดว่าพนักงานจะพูดอย่างไรคะ ขึ้นต้นประโยคว่า ‘your friend’ จากนั้นก็ตามด้วยประชาสัมพันธ์ ‘reception’ นะคะ

สังเกตว่าเราไม่ใช้ ‘the’ กับ ‘reception’ นะคะ
แค่นี้ก็เข้าใจวิธีใช้ ‘at’, ‘on’ และ ‘in’ สำหรับบอกตำแหน่งที่อยู่แล้วนะคะ
