Lullaby: Boi da Cara Preta Language: Portuguese Country of origin: Brazil Chosen by: Americo Martins
Listen to Americo
Listen to Americo singing Boi da Cara Preta
My name is Americo. I’m from Sao Paolo in Brazil. My mum used to sing this little song, ‘Boi da Cara Preta’ when I was a kid.
It’s very strange actually because it talks about a black bull which would come and take the children away. Funny that, given that it’s for little kids. It’s like a threat. The mum is singing to the little guy, ‘If you don’t behave, the bull will come and take you away.’ Yet it’s a nice song even though the words don’t match the sweet melody.
