Well I can't quite believe another term has passed by already, where is the time going?! Spring term has been really quite stressful, as I know it has for many of my friends too. For some reason Spring term is always the worst. It begins in the name, I mean the months of January, February and March don't really constitute Spring for a start. I felt really stretched this term; doing both Linguistics and Literature modules at the same time really took its toll. It was like ten weeks of frantically trying to finish readings and struggling with similarly timed deadlines from both departments.

Partly it was my own fault that I had such a full term, I made the decision to audition for West Side Story and Fusion (the biggest charity show on campus, comprising of dance, music and fashion), knowing full well I would have a lot of work to do. I was determined to see everything through and I was so glad I did, as rehearsing really took my mind off everything else that was going on. It hasn't been just academically that I've felt stretched but emotionally too. The past few weeks have really tested me (feel like I'm sounding a bit like Jesus here, but what the hell). This term my house mate had appendicitis and after a misdiagnosis from the doctor and her in screaming agony, I realised her imminent fate was in my (and our wonderful taxi driver's) hands. Thankfully he made the decision that he should really take us to the hospital. | "No matter what problems people have, large or small, those problems to that person will always be the worst in the world" | |
I have never felt so responsible for someone in all my life, trying to reassure her Dad on the other end of her mobile while she screamed 'I want to die!' from her hospital bed wasn't the easiest task, especially when all I wanted to do was cry like the child I still think I am! Ahh well. She recovered and everything was fine in the end, I just didn't feel adult enough to be equipped to manage the situation. I did though, and I'm glad I did and now know that I can. Her appendicitis was really just the tip of the iceberg, other people I am close to have been sick, ranging from conjunctivitis to terminally ill. That mixed with house hunting for the next academic year, attempting to recruit an extra housemate and the general pains of university work made for a generally rubbish time. It also really opened my eyes to the fact that no matter what problems people have, large or small, those problems to that person will always be the worst in the world. That sometimes has been really difficult to appreciate.

That said, I have had some amazing times this term, taking part in West Side Story and Fusion was great, I enjoyed it so much. I also ran for Dance Society elections and got elected as Secretary which I was really happy about. Of course I still managed to fit in plenty of wizard japes this term, although I don't believe the Famous Five had access to limousines and beverages past ginger beer! Ha ha. My house mates and I also recruited a lovely fourth girl to live with us next year and found a gorgeous house to rent. I can't wait to get stuck into Summer term now, which is always by far the best. I will only be doing linguistics too which should be a slight relief, so hopefully I will have lots of fun and frolics to report! Helen |
