A keen social observer, Tony Ray-Jones took as his subject 'everyday' events and turned them into something extraordinary. This photograph was reproduced in Ray-Jones' book, 'A Day Off - An English Journal', his study of the British at leisure. He died in 1972 from leukaemia, aged just 30. His work influenced a new generation of British photographers, including Martin Parr, one of the most respected figures in British social documentary photography.
