Staffordshire Bull Terriers

That icon of the county, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was once a fighting dog, although it can make a good pet. Victoria Ellis sticks up for our local breed affectionately known as the 'Staffie'.

The name 'Staffordshire bull terrier' originates from the area that the breed was first standardised and were officially recognised by the kennel club as a breed in 1935.

It is suggested that much of the work to achieve the high-profile status of a kennel club breed was done at a Staffordshire fanciers meetings at the Cross Guns Hotel in Cradley Heath (this was once part of south Staffordshire before the county borders were changed).
About fifty breeders met at the club and formed the original Staffordshire Terrier Club.

However, often demonised because of links to the more aggressive fighting dog, the pit bull, the Staffie has fallen out of favour with dog owners in recent years.

Unwanted

Although my father as a child owned a Staffordshire bull terrier named Peggy when he was a child, I had had very little contact with breed.  My perceptions of the dog had been shaped by my father’s memories of Peggy, a dutiful and attentive dog that used to follow him around the back to back streets of terraces in Smallthorne.

So when I discovered that an RSPCA survey had discovered that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier was on the Top Ten most unwanted breeds of dog, it would be an understatement to say that my reaction was one of shock.
Statistics show that regionally the Staffie is the breed that ends up at RSPCA animal centres most frequently, followed by Rottweilers, German Shepherds and Collies.

The RSPCA argues that the common perception of a Staffie as an aggressive dog often is a by-product of the ill-informed and irresponsible owners that are more concerned with the dog’s image rather than the ownership of a pet.

RSPCA North regional superintendent David Millard, said: "Staffies have had a terrible press …our experience suggests that problems occur when bad owners exploit the Staffies' desire to please by training them to show aggression."

Adoption

The RSPCA are hoping that potential owners of Staffies will come forward and adopt an unwanted dog.
See:  www.rspca.org.uk/paw

My friend's recent experience of adopting an unwanted Staffie from the Stoke on Trent City Dog's Home has been a rewarding one. She has a young daughter that has bonded quickly with the dog (ironically named Tyson!) as he is soft as a brush.

He has helped to build the self confidence of the child and her awareness of respect and love for animals is evident in the close relationship that they share.

The temperament of the Staffie has often made it a great friend to children and loyal to its owners.  It is often regarded as an intelligent and active little dog that gets on well with both adults and children alike; they are affectionate dogs much preferring the company of humans than that to of over dogs.

History

Among those who know, the Staffie is highly regarded.
At one time, the most high-profile Staffie in the country must have been the Staffie dog that acted as the mascot to the Staffordshire Regiment.  Howver, The Staffords were disbanded in the last round of Army reforms.

Now, it's your chance!
What do you think of the breed?
What more do you know of the history of any Staffies?
Do you like the fact that the Staffie is iconic of the county?
Do you know of any good Staffie websites?
Use the messageboard below to leave your comments....

One last thing - just like the people of its namesake county of Staffordshire, the Staffie is the dog that never stops grinning!

lol - "thick thugs, drug dealers, and half-wits with personality problems" - perhaps someone should warn my employers of nearly ten years (I work for the Police) of my out-of-hours habits! I have never seen ANY aggression from my Staffie. Nor have I met a nasty Staffie in the course of my duties. They aren't inherently social dogs as regards other dogs, it's true, but this is no problem with a well socialised dog. It's the age old adage I'm afraid - "There are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners". For the record, whenever my Staf has been started upon by another dog, he's just looked bewildered and walked away.

this is to pam hayes for your information it was bull baiting not bear and if the dogs are so viscious why are they not under the dangerous dog act like the pit bull is now. the staff is a great, fun, exellent with children and freindly pet i own 1 my self he's brindle and white called wiley n he is the best dog i av owned ur perception is by rubbish you hear until you've had 1 as a pet you cannot comment now if another dog had bad press 4 example like a labradour you would be sayin and feelin the same they are good dogs that was an example and its not the dog who is bad its the stupid people who have them and don't bring them up properly that makes the dog look bad and any dog not just staffy's in the hands of these idiots are goin 2 be viscious and that its not the dog its the master behind it

david
ihave one

If you lookon google the staffordshire bull terrior is responsible for numerous attacks on children and other animals. They are weapons, not pets, and should be banned

Donna
I recently lost my 11 year old labrador to cancer. I got a 13 week old staffy from my local animal rescue, he is very intellient, two days to toilet train him, so loving, he understands no, and gives us so much love, and attention, i would recommend a staffy for a pet to anyone.

Les
I had a staffie/rottie cross for 14 years until cancer claimed him last year.He was the most loyal friend i could of had, soft as a brush but if i was away would protect my wife and child to the death.Let these yobs who beat any type of dog to make it agressive have a bit of their own medicin,i would happily oblige in doing it for them.

Dave
I think you have summed up everthing about the nature of a staffie. They are simply the best family dog going the bad press comes from poor owners who do not deserve to keep any type of pet. The staffie is the S in staffordshire.

Henry, aged 12
My Staffy is called Rouble and she was starved badly for the first 6 months of her life. She is loyal and yes- she doesn't stop grinning! The average lifespan of the Stafford is 9-15 years.

Samuel Devine
I have a little staff, her names Winnie. We got her 7 years ago after a young child of 10 rescued her from the lads from a local estate, she was fragile and scared. After taking her to the vet and discovering the horror stories about what they had potentially done to her, it took us 2 years for her to fully trust us. She is the most amazing dog I have ever come across, she is loyal and easy to command. She has never gone for another dog unless provoked numerous times. I was upset yesterday when another dog walker could not controller her dog and shouted at me when Winnie barked her away. The reputation of these dogs is through the failings of owners. BBC Three showed a traumatising documentary a while ago "My dog is a weapon", this shows exactly how these dogs are now neglected the way they are. Another BBC article “Ruff deal for the Staffie” explains that these dogs are the best of two from 190 breeds. Winnie treats children differently and is very patient around them. Amazing dog to have in my life, she really is my best friend. Another great article by the BBC.

I now own 2 staffies(father n son). we originally got the son 1st aft my friends dog had a litter i wasnt sure at 1st as u hear all the stories about them but we got him n he is the best dog iv ever owned he is now 2 and about 6months ago my friend needed help with her staffies so i took the dad n he is the softest dog iv ever known he cant jus lie next to u he has to lie on u!! when i 1st got them my mum was totally against it but now they luv nothin more than goin to 'grannies' or a cuddle n to play with her 4 dogs. i get sick of people given me dirty looks when im out with them but i now wouldnt have any other breed they r the best. PUNISH THE DEED NOT THE BREED!!

Dani
I own a rescue stafford called Bruno who although he had a bad start and can be dog aggressive with some, he is the most doting dog and a big lump, He took to my son when he was born as if this was what he was there to do - a true nanny dog and a delight to own. People who have never met a staffie shouldnt judge a book by its cover. I have met many, even ones with bad starts and have yet to meet one who doesnt want to lick you to death.I love my staffie smiles when I get home and wouldnt have any other dog !!!

karen hancox
i have a 4 year old hank they are the best dogs you will ever have if you have no love get a staffie who will love you no matter what very loyal breed that will live to make you happy

Oscar's Owner
I have a beautiful black, white and dark brindle Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Oscar. He is a big softy, he;s loyal and is good around all people and even most dogs. It's all about how you bring a dog up , they learn off of you and often reflect your personality through their actions. so i can only imagine what these people must do to make this gorgeous breed do what is reported in the press. I'm fed upi of bad press and crappy progammes being put on the tv showing shallow minded societies veiws about "typical" staff owners.

Leah Holdaway
I work with stray dogs and many of them unfortunately are Staffordshire Bull Terriers and their crosses. This breed is a fantastic one that is so misunderstood. I realise many people do use them as a status dog but the majority of them I work with are fantasic. They are cuddly and affectionate and very eager to please. They are also easy to train. Unfortunately the media has started a hate campaign with no understanding of the breed. At the end of the day every dog has teeth and in the wrong situation will use them. It amazes me that we don't normally trust the media yet when it comes to dogs they are obviously talking the truth! Anyone who does not like the breed should spend some time with the friendly well looked after dogs and I can guarantee you won't be disappointed!

Joanna
I had a black staffie named Ted, when I was 18, he was the best companion ever, he helped me though some difficult times, he was loyal and made me feel safe. He was never agressive. I will never forget him. I now have a english bull terrier. The bull breeds are the kindest and loyal breed of dog not deserving the press they get...Its the owners....

Rebecca Wylde
I love them, they are such lovely dogs.I have one Named Sassy

I adopted a rescue staffy a month ago. I also have 2 labradors, one of which is a dobie cross lab, of 4 and 11. I wanted a playmate for the younger one. At 1yr old this poor staffy has already fallen victim to 2 previous 'bad' homes. Not fighting hoodie types but normal 'family' types. The first owners allowed her to have puppies very early on with the intention of making money but reality meant the puppies made zilch so they abandoned her. She was then rescued and re homed to a seemingly lovely family who dressed her in pink, called her 'princess' then got bored with her and locked her in a cage without enough food and water until she was re-rescued. She is a victim of circumstances yet remains of the sweetest, amicable nature. I am a responsible, experienced, mature, working, intelligent dog owner. I have children and grandchildren, neighbours and friends and would never risk keeping a dog who was a threat to any of them. I would like to voice my objections to the likes of Pam Hayes who make ludicrous assumptions and scaremonger to the detriment of many thousands of these lovely natured dogs. To the detriment also of the many 'hoodie' types that love and cherish their dogs and would never cause them any harm, or wish harm on others but are simply looking for love and find that in their dogs. Look at our government and the bigger problem of improving the environments of some of these people and stop tarring everyone with the media images of the moment. Your nasty, ignorant, tarnished views hurt people and prevent many perfectly good dogs from being re homed, resulting in the many innocent dogs being put to death.

Dawn
I find it really amusing, I am a hoodie, a druggie and guilty of anti social behaviour because i choose to own a wonderfully loyal and loving staffy! Our 12 year old dog is a family pet, he was bought up with our children who ten years on have their own children. Would i leave small children alone with him? NO but i would also not leave small children alone with any other breed of dog. Do i trust him? Yes. Our other staffy, a female suffered with late onset epilepsy, despite this her temperament did not change, she was a gentle soul without and nastiness in her. All dogs have the ability to learn how to fight and be nasty, and the youth culture of today makes a nasty dog a fashion item, Maybe these yobs should re think the breed they choose, will they still feel the same way about a dog who in victorian times was used as a Nanny Dog in nurseries!! I think not

sandra blaine
i have a staffie, had him from 7 wks old hes four next feb, wouldnt be without him hes a big softie wouldnt change him for anything

will
regarding staffordshire bull terriers and all other dogs.it is only the owner that teaches the dogs or not teach as the case may be and because of that many breeds have been dragged through the mud from the pitt bull to the german shepard dog all are lovely breeds and just need the right care and attention from the right owner its not th dog which is the problem its us weather we like it or not

Caroline
I have a lovely staffy/cross lab called Paddy or Biscuits, hes is the most gentle dog imaginable and gets upset even when 'we sound like we're angry about something' - ie the husband watching football on the TV - we also have a Spollie, springer spaniel crossed with a sheep dog who has on the odd occasion been aggressive (shes very defensive), Paddy just runs and hides at any hint of trouble, the best dog ever, I can only think people have been attacked by other pit bulls and thought they were staffies as they do look very similar

Mel Ellis.
Pam Hayes wrote 'thick thugs, drug dealers, and half-wits with personality problems (trying to compensate by having an ugly dangerous 'dog')'Well, I am none of the above and I have a 'staffy'. I must admit that a lot of people who own staffies are not responsible dog owners but more and more people who would never have considered a staffy are warming to their charm (I'm one of them!) It is the ill informed, prejudiced opinions like those of Pam that are causing these dogs and their crosses to be dumped in their thousands across the country. People forget that these dogs are terriers and terriers are not renowned for getting on with other dogs generally, every Jack Russell I have met has had a go at my dog, who just goes up to say hello. Yet if a small terrier attacks another dog then nothing is said or done, except 'oh he's a fiesty little thing'. I spend my life trying to save these poor dogs, who end up in council pounds, never asking to be born, or to be owned by people who do not treat them like one of the family and dumped when they get bored of them. The majority of these dogs go to loving homes and are wonderful family pets.I would say to anyone who reads what the newspapers say and listen to the news, DO NOT BELIEVE ALL THAT YOU HEAR; spend some time with a staffie, look into their eyes and I mean really look and see their gentleness, experience the staffy enthusiam for life and their giving of overwhelming love by enthusiastic staffy kisses. Do not be stupid enough to be told what to believe.

Cara-Anne Corstorphine
I have a 17month old male staffy called Bother :) he lives in a house with 2 young children and also we got a new puppy at the start ofthe year and we have never had any problem! When i was young i was allways scared of dogs, but before i got my puppy (Bother) i knew his mother (Trouble, that was where i got the ider of his name)and after meeting her she was the only dog i trusted, after she had her first litter of pups i relise i wanted one, not just because there sooo cute but because there are so loyal but i see him as my wee baby. I know it sounds silly but if you have this breed you would understand, and i get very upset when i hear people bad month or hear horrid storys about them! Its not the breed it the owner!

Dee
Oh dear, in response to Pam Hayes; it is such a shame that you can be so narrow minded where Staffies are concerned. I have a Staffie who is the gentlest dog I have ever owned to date. I have had collies and also a Lhasa Apso (the smallest yet the most aggressive of the lot). Last week as I was out playing with my dog a Jack Russell attacked him. He has also been attacked by other breeds of dogs; A westie in the same field and a poodle in a generic pet shop to name but a few. On all occasions I can assure you that he was the one being bitten and not doing the biting. Staffies are a gentle loyal breed unless trained otherwise (as with all dogs, it depends on how they are treated). They are not born monsters, but kind playful dogs. Now it was only a few months ago as I was about to sit down in a friends house that his Schnauzer growled and snapped at me and continued to do so if he didn't get his own way. Am I now convinced that all Schnauzers are nasty dogs that act badly if they do not get their own way? No.. it was one dog and hardly a true representative of it's breed as a whole. From my experience it is the smaller breeds that have the nasty temperaments as a whole. So maybe we should count ourselves lucky that our Staffies haven't adopted some of these 'small breed' attributes, otherwise you might be just a little bit more justified in your misgivings. As a quick afterthought I am a well educated, upstanding member of the community. Not any of the following {and I quote} "thick thugs, drug dealers, and half-wits with personality problems (trying to compensate by having an ugly dangerous 'dog')"

Sean Riley
It's by far the greatest "hybrid" dog out, with it's strong sense of family loyalty,a very eiger to please dog, which loves kids & adults alike.Despite the recent bad publicity, the breed continues to be 1 of the most poular in the country,by owners of all ages & sexes.I love this pocket battleship and my 1 gives me all the pleasure in the world, will never be without 1.

Lynne
I have 2 SBT, we exercise daily in the park with a favourite ball and are often joined by dogs of other breeds both large and small for a good run after the balls. They all get along fantastic. One of my dogs has been attacked on two occassions by a West Highland both times - and what did my savage dog do - he ran to me for protection! I love my dogs dearly, treat them with kindness and in return they are faithful loyal pets who I would lay down my life for. They get on really well with my live in grandchildren and all their friends that troop through the house. They are so eager to please and in the right hands they truely are a wonderful pet. A very good site to visit with thousands of pictures and videos of staffies, along with advice on behaviour, training, feeding etc, etc is www.staffyclub.com rather than be swayed by all the bad press please take a look and see the other side of our beloved breed. Thank you.

Lisa Parkes
I own 4 staffs and have 3 kids that have grown up with all my staffs close by,i have owned other breeds and have never seen a better breed to bring your kids up with as they really are loyal, kind, thoughtful dogs that are the best medicine anyone could have when you are feeling down cus 1 cuddle with a staff makes you feel on top of the world. It infurriates me when people cross the road when you are walking your staff and to be honest i would not want to share the path with someone so narrow minded.Anyone looking for their perfect canine companion dont look no further than a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Elena
I have 2 staffies. They are the most affectionate, loving, loyal and adorable little dogs that I could ever have. I would not change them for anything. They follow me everywhere, they never leave me alone and they comfort me when I am sad. I am so saddened by the bad press staffies are getting at the moment. I just wish that there was a law that controls where dogs end up because it is not the breed that need to be blamed but bad dog owners.I will always have a staffy in my life, they are superb dogs.

Debbie-h
I have a 2 year old Staffy and wouldnt own any other breed - She is so gentle with my grandson - greets all the local kids coming home from school and likes nothing better than a good cuddle - any dog can look feirce when it barks or growls and the staffy having such a wide mouth can look menacing but looks can be decieving - i have been bitten twice by dogs - once by a Jack Russel and another time by a yorkshire terrier - never by a staffy

hayley davis
i have a blue staffy called paddy hes the softest dog ever hes great with my 4 and 6 year old girls, fantastic with other dogs its ignorant people who have nothing good to say about them. all dogs are capable of biting not just staffys its just small minded people they ahve their views and theres no changing them but if you have nothing positive to say its best not to say anything. just read what ranking they are by the rspca to have as a family dog higher than a laborador so what does that say theres more attacks from poodles than staffy you just here more about staffy because they are associated with pitbulls but if you look at a staffy and pitbull theres quiet a difference in how they look.my staffy is such a gorgious looking dog everyone stops us to say so it takes us forever to get anywhere.

Liv
I volunteer at a Staffie Rescue and have seen what the prejudice against this breed does. The staffie is a loyal and loving dog. Yes of course it is strong and so therefore needs to be trained and socialised. However, did you know that the other breed type who can lock their jaws is the lab, that cocker spaniels have one of the highest bite incidents with children? All dogs need to understand that they are not the pack leader, all dogs need to be well socialised, well exercised and well trained. The dogs I have the most problems with are the spoilt toy dogs who are dominant, under socialised and yappy with my foster dog staffie and the owners who find their little dogs cute whereas if you saw the same behaviour in a larger breed then people would say you were an irresponsible owner. I have always said that I would never have a staffie, not because of the breed but because of the way that people react to them. However, I have had my mind completely changed by all the dogs that come through the rescue that I work with. I no longer really care how people react to them as it is more important that the dogs that we see coming through the rescue are given a chance, and so often their last chance. They are such sweet and enthusiastic dogs. Over 35,000 staffie's are put to sleep every year because of over breeding and because people going to rescues to look for a dog say so often 'any breed but a staff'. These are beautiful loyal and loving animals. Irresponsible owners and sensationalist media are the ones that cause problems in these animals. If you are thinking of getting a dog have a look at Rescue Remedies and give one of these little staffies and staffie crosses a chance.

john mcmillan
this is to pam hayes,i have 2 staffies and love them dearly,i am sorry you think that way, givin to the propper trainer your little mut could be as nasty as you described staffies its down to the way the dog is raised and trained not the dog so in future don't post any pointless untrue comments such as the one i have just read.

Lisa
We have a female Staffordshire Bull Terrier who just turned 1 year in September. She is a joy!!! We have a 12-year old male Cardigan Welsh Corgi and they have become the best of friends. We were sure how Koa would feel about having a "kid" in the house and I'm sure there are times when he wishes she wasn't around but it's sooooo good to see him playing again. He had back surgery a few years ago and doesn't get around very well but Kamalani takes that into consideration and let's him catch her from time to time. She's still a puppy with lots of energy but she is the sweetest little thing when she's tired. I can't wait until she gets older and slows down just a bit. We've already been in touch with her breeder to let him know that when the time comes we want to get her a little brother.

Mary
When I was just about 5 years old, our neighbours had a staffie called George. He was fine when the adults were around but if I came to the door on my own he was pretty scary and one day pushed the door open, ran at me and knocked me into a rose bed. Not sure what happened next, just remember him standing over me till he was called off by his owner. Still not too keen on staffies after that and would never have one unsupervised around children.

roxy
U people moaning about them dont even know what u r talking about. I have two and im sure im not a drug dealer or a thug. I am a mother of 3 and mine r very good with children and other dogs. The only reason mine r ever aggresive is when attacked or something is attacking it's family i.e me or my children

SARAH
We love our staffie, he is so gentle and loving. He loves people and is fantastic with children. I take exception to being told that only half wits and yobs have staffies. My sister in law ownes the nastiest dog i've ever met, it's bitten so may people and it is a springer spaniel! We always keep our staffie on a lead whilst walking and i wish owners of little yappy dogs would too! our staffie has been attacked by a Jack Russell and a yorkshire terrier. Little dogs are far more aggressive than a staffy. Unfortunatly a lot of people have staffies because they think it gives them an image of being tough, when we adopted our staffie he arrived with a studded collar and a large chain, we soon got rid of that and he looks lovely now and is a real butterball.

Hatter
Can`t comment on Pit Bulls never had one I don`t like to talk about things that I am ignorant about unlike others who have posted on this site. I have been and owner of a staffie for 7 years she is a beautiful black brindle and a relative of voodoo the ex-show winner she has never displayed and aggesive tendancies towards any human beings and is a calm and peaceful dog. I am not saying that my staffie likes other dogs as she doesn`t but that can be true of any dogs especially small yappy little one westhighland terriers, scotties or even miniature schnauzers for example. I fully believe that a dogs personaily is formed by its parents much the same as children there is no getting away from the fact they they were bread in the 1800s as fighting dogs and not recognised by the kennel club until i believe it was 1837 but i ask you this if my great, great, great, great grandad was a cage fighter does that make me one ???? Lets hope any further postings on this page will be educated and not just ramblings of the ignorance try owning a staffie then make a judgement !

karen wilson
i lost my staffie shola from cancer, my best friend!i loved her with all of my heart....,she was so good natured, loveable, i miss her even after nearly two years after having her put to sleep at home with her family around her.

philip
i have owned and bred kc registered staffies for over 5 years now and believe them to be the best dog to have around kids bar none! and as for pam hayes comments about them being ugly miniature schnauzer enough said in the right hands they can be a loving and caring part of a family and they are better looking than pam hayes`s schnauzer so keep your silly comments to yourself because the pedigree staffordshire bull terrier is one of the best dogs around that is why it is up there as one of the most popular terriers at crufts! that is all i have to say and applaud all the people on here that are making grown up comments.

Colliedog
In my opinion, Staffies are totally unpredicatable. My collie was recently attacked by a staffie. It was unprovoked and very nasty. The staffie got hold and shook her from side to side like a rag. I had to intervene quickly and the staffie was going for the throat. My collie has nasty puncture wounds to her leg. I am now petrified of Staffies.

CHRIS
I THINK STAFFIES R THE BEST THEY R SO KIND AND LOVEING AND GREBT WITH THE KIDS

Michelle
I have a male staffie who is 10 yrs old now called Busta, hes been fab with me and loves fuss he tends to run away from other dogs which proves hes not 'an aggressive dog as some of you think', i recently got a kitten and was so shocked to see how well they got on, so well infact that the cat now 1 yr old actually jumps on the dog and chases him round the house. Hes so soft its unreal at times, its not the dogs but the people who own them that make the dog the way it is, it really bugs my when people say they should be banned NO they shouldnt but the irresponsible owners should be banned from having dogs full stop!!!!

ryan
they are the best dogs to have they are so loyal

Tracy
I have a 1 yr old male staffie and couldnt wish for a more affectionate, loving dog.I also have a springer spaniel and the two of them get on like the best of friends.A lot of the bad press received is unjust.Any dog in the wrong hands could have a violent streak, however more and more people are keeping pit bulls etc which are illegal breeds in britain and calling them staffies for legal reasons. So many people are ignorant to this fact as thet are very similar in appearance. My two cats also love my staffie to bits.

naomi
i have two male staffies and a would trust them with my life people like the last commenter should wise up and get her facts straight not all all staffs r the same it down to bad owner ship not the breed and down to people how have them being half wits am a police women

lee
my staffie alfie is so friendly with kids and animals i would recomend them to anyone

Pam Hayes
My miniature schnauzer was attacked by one of your highly immortalised 'staffies' last friday. Totally unprovoked and like a bolt of lightening it grabbed his face - obviously going for his nose, as did its ancestors when killing bulls during bear baiting. This innate very aggressive tendency is in ALL 'staffies' without exception. They are lethal near other dogs. They are an ugly powerful muscle with a massive crushingly powerful mouth. There are only certain types of people who have them - for this very reason, ie; thick thugs, drug dealers, and half-wits with personality problems (trying to compensate by having an ugly dangerous 'dog'). People are now mixing this breed - 'staffie' - with dobermans. What does that tell us? These abominations should be banned. And that includes the dogs.

jd
ive got staffs AND A PITBULL; they have only been agressive when another dog attacked me. the dda is a joke; i walk my APBT in the day and nobody is any the wiser prob coz his ears arent cropped.
And which dogs are dangerous? my son had plastic surgery on his face because of a dog attack it was a... springer spaniel ! you should have a test to own a dog!!!!!!!

Richard
A wonderful breed, my favourite. Loyal and affectionate. They frequently though are less fond of their own kind - which can cause strange looks.

Tony
I have had two staffies from 8 weeks pups (Max and Monty, brothers in fact) for a year now, both unneutered. I can honestly say that I am delighted I didn't listen to the doom mongers. They are wonderful, friendly to both people and other dogs (unless pushed quite hard) and great around my 1 year old and 4 year old daughters ( they just barge by the grown ups!). They're also intelligent and cooperative. Without any help from a trainer (or any formal training) they recall well off the lead, sit stay, go to their crates etc. I will never stop having staffies while I'm still strong enough to walk two at the same time! (yes, one of them pulls like crazy if not exercised first)

Catherine Owen
I hate this breed. However much people say they are lovely, I have never seen it. It always seems to be the staffies in my local park who pick on other dogs and bite them, I think they should all be banned!

donna
Unsociable and wrongly named nanny dog, i have been on the end of this breeds bad temperament twice with my dog. Bred for fighting and should NEVER be off a lead unpredictable.More to the point statistics show they are now causing more injuries to children by attacking than any other breed. Should be along side the other dangerous breeds then the world would be a better and safer place

anna
i want a staffie so much, my friend has one called summer and she is cute and friendly

Adam
It makes me some proud that this fantastic Dog represents our county. I live in London now and when I'm asked where I'm from I always "Staffordshire" Where Staffordshire bull terriers hail from. It's gr8. They are fantastic dogs. It's just a shame that they have been given a bad name by scum bags who don't know how to look after a dog.

Ellie
My family always wanted a dog and we went to a rescue centre and walked different types of dogs to see which would suit us and we liked a staffie which we were told had beenbred and dumped, we decided she was the one for us and so decided to take her home! we have now named her Jenni and she is the most softest, lovable dog you could imagine and even people that see her complement her on her being so nice even though as her being a staffie, they would have thought twice due to all the bad press coverage! :)

Lyndsey
When me and my husband talked about getting a dog he I wanted a labrador he insisted on having a staffordshire bull terrier I can honestly say I'm glad he insisted she is the most faithful little friend I have ever had we love her so much

Felicity
i love staffies, i can't understand why people judge dogs based on breed. you only hear about them and rotties attacking because it makes a better heading lan lab or golden reteiver attack. i say this because a golden badly mauled a child and the only media attention that got was a tiny paragraph on the internet. if it had been a staff, rottie or pit it would have been on the front of every news paper, on radio and tv for weeks. its people taht give these dogs a bad name not the dogs!

angela t-s
we have a 4 yr staff called jacks its like having a toddler with you. he has a super temperment very loyal and so clever, he likes to help do the washing and put it in the machine he picks up his toys after he finished if you tell him to, thats more than some kids will do he learns things so easily if people take the time with them theres no end to the things you can teach themas they are so clever, its owners that are the problem when they say it stupid what they should say is they them selfs are stupid not staffies they are a brill dog to own

anna
i have had staffords for many years. i breed and show my babies and they are a much ;loved member of my family, which includes 3 children ranging in age from 1 to 10. these dogs are loyal, respectful, fun and loving companions, i will never have another breed of dog in my family home. they are the "Nanny Dog".

mrs hammond
first of all i love my staffie very much , he as been a great companion so loving and play like having a extra child in the house my dog is called Buster and he is 11 years old , but for the last 6 months all he does is cry we take him out , we play with him we give him lots of cuddles , we took him to the vet because we were worried about him but the vet said he was healthy and great for his age, and said he must be crying because we have spoiled him , please as any one got any answers as it is driving us all mad we just want him back the way he was can any one help please . mrs Hammond.

Ashleigh
My partner had a staffie when I got with him and now I'm having my first child we are getting another staffie but he swears by the breed and won't have any other dog. He says they are loyal and very loving.

samantha
i think that staffies have got such bad press and get mistaken for other breeds...i have a ginger and white staffie that goes by the name 'shug!' hes such a loving dog and would not hurt a fly i have a baby son that is now 7 and half months and shug is brilliant with him he always follows my son around never leaves his side when we bought him home from hospital he sat by the side of the moses basket and didnt move the whole time for about a day not even to go to the toilet....i think that they are such loving dogs and that people should not give them such bad prss

Jack, Stafford
I exercise my staffie bitch Ellie on a mobilaty scooter, she's 6 now and the most faithful dog you could wish for wonderful with kids of all ages from 1 to 101 in fact when she was young she used to try and get in the youngsters buggie with them luckily we always use the same track so the mothers soon realised she meant no harm and were more worried about the bedding then the child. As for other dogs she plays with the ones she knows and ignores all others unless they are off the lead and come to close to me then she warns them off and stand between me and the other dog like the sack of muscles that she is. She has been raised with love and repays us many times over.

Sandra Milburn
I have a staffy dog and he is the loveliest dog ever. He is always having fun with my young grandson. It's the way they are raised that sometimes causes problems.

sarah hague
They're lovely, great fun, the ones Ive known - and I'd like to adopt one from the RSPCA myself. A friend of mine has one - the first time I got to meet this staffie, she was so affectionate, jumped up on my lap and fell asleep!

dean vose
Staffies are loving dogs I've had 6 staffies in all. The're not vicious, they're dead soft, they play a lot and don't attack people.

Jess
Staffs are excellent with people but tend to jump chest first into other dogs. My two dogs have been attacked twice by different staffs at different locations while mine have been under control and on the lead. I agree this is the owners' fault for not being in control, but my dogs have never been attacked by any other breed. The last attack was on my 4 month old yorkie cross from behind, with no warning. Due to this I can never be a fan of the breed. At the end of the day they make fantastic dogs for people and children, but not for other dogs from my experience.

lauren
My girl Staffy is 9 months old now and she is so loving and gentle she doesn't even know how to growl unless it's at a book or dvd case which she is scared from lol. She's nuts! I'll be honest, before i got her i didn't know about the breed and wasn't sure about them. But i did my research, got her and I'll never look back!! Blame the deed not the breed:)

keith,staffordshire
i have owend staffs for a good 8yrs.my first, sena was bought when he was about 8 months old. he was the best dog i had ever owned, and the best friend i had ever had!!i know that most staffie owners truly believe that their dogs are very safe but they have to realise that these dogs were breed for fighting, bears and bulls, and eventuallly other dogs! this fighting gene is still installed in the breed and owners must respect this fact! the breed is very loyal very strong and very courageous, and i wouldnt own any other breed of dog.ive owned labs, german sheperds but the staff is the best by far! the only concern i have with them is they have a tendancy to square up to other dogs even if unprovoctd maybe it's just a protection concern to their owners? my first staff was very bad for it, and the two that i own now, brother and sister are just the same. i am not a chav i am a loving responsable owner with the opinion that staffs are the ultimate dog as long as the owners realise the damage capabilities of this dog and do show some conserns. i love my two dearly and wouldnt be without them and i know they would both die for me. LONG LIVE THE STAFFIE BREED, DEFINATELY MANS BEST FRIEND!!!!!!

patrick dundon
i had a staff many years ago, and he was crazy (fun). i have just recently bought 2 young staff pups. i have never had a bad experience with them nor my 4 children. fantastic breed, brave and protective. behind every bad dog (any breed) there is a bad owner.

mandy,middlesbrough
i have a 8yr old staffie shes the most loving dog ive ever had shes great with children and other dogs she luvs 2 climb on sofa with u 4 cuddles on a nite while u watching tv shes the most loving pet ive ever had.

mary
We've got a staffie he's very friendly and he's black and white. I would never get another dog as friendly as him.

farrah
i have a staff, a staffxjr, and looking after another staff (mad i know) these are brilliant dogs and exellent with my two young children under 5, which rehoming center will not allow this is a shame as if allowed would have rehomed one (or two!) unfourtunaly they have got a bad reputation from bad owners, they are not baby killers ect tho do belive they have a fighting streaks esp male staff with another male staff! i live in croydon where am surrounded by staff sadly not well brought up! and many have been trained to fight which scares me when out walking my own dogs which sadly is limiting there 'walkies', as scince my dog was attacked on his face by another staff who locked jaw on his face! have been scared of them ever since! other than bad owner, non socalised dogs sadly behave this way too

Ian Bromley
i wouldnt own any other breed although i love all animals.itis only the scrotes that give them a bad name,if you want to look hard join a gym you muppets and leave our beautiful breed alone

Misty
People judge these dogs to much.its like being racist and then juding a person. there good dogs, i own one she is the most loveable dog and i trust her with my life, maybe im wrong for saying that but its true. i put my face next to her and she just licks me. i know many of my friends do this aswel. our staffies wouldnt hurt a fly thats how docile they are.everyone should do a favour to this lovely breed an adopt a puppy or adult staffordshire bull terrier from a local shelter. you will be saving a life and saving the breed.

kevin
my winstone best dog ever what moor can i say

richard
These are the best breed of dogs! (in my opinion). The only thing i dont like is there undeserved reputation caused by chavs who buy these dogs because they think they are 'hard'dogs, i have 2 and they are as soft and as daft as a brush. breeders should choose more wisely who they sell to.

nicola
staffies are loving reliable sensitive timid fun to be around great company and the best dogs in the world.

Suzanne, Snoop, (Kizzy) GLASGOW
I wrote in about a month ago about my dog named Kizzy, i've changed her name 3 times since i had her from 6wks old. Now i would like 2 call her Snoop, + she's now 15wks old about 4 months.Anyway about our story so far, my older brother was looking for a staffie aand asked me 2 keep my ears open so i did. I got him a beautiful brown + white one at 11wks. The guy i got him from for my brother was georgous + he stayed just around the corner from me. When he brought the dog down 2 show me i fell in love with him + phoned my mum 2 pay for the dog for my brother + my mum was also excited she says come round right away. So he had named the dog Wolfy + told us the poor pup had its 2 jags + stayed in for another 2 wks. We had a bad feeling the poor pup hadn't had its first jag at 6 wks old. So my mum phoned the vet he says the dog had its jags + they had no recognition of a Wolfy + his name + address. So he'll get his second one this week then have 2 stay in for another 2 wks. My brother has already got him his first jag + waiting 4 his 2nd. My brother has now called Wolfy, Brandy + thank God the poor pup is still alive. The guy i got him from didn't need 2 say the dog had his jags because my brother was still buying the dog but he's doing good. Anyway about my Kizzy (Snoop) is doing wonderful now i can take her out 4 long walks which i couldn't the last time we wrote 2 u. Because i wasn't allowed out but now i cant get enough of it. Im getting a lot of freedom + i love my big long walks + running about with my owner. My owner loves me soooooooooooo much + i luvvvvvvvvvv my owner also. Well im going 2 have a nap + will keep you informed on how im getting on + my best friend Brandy. Love all my Staffie friends + other dogs. (Snoop) KIZZY

NAOMI
I OWN 2 MALE STAFFIES CALLED KENZIE N DEACON THERE THE BEST EVER WITH MY 4 KIDS WOULD NEVER WANT 2 B WITH OUT THEM

Jen Barbour
i have a staffie called Presley he is 18 months and a bundle of joy.scared of the hoover and the ironing board though haha

Lee
i OWN A WONDERFULL STAFFIE CALLED RUBY WHO IS THE BEST FAMILY PET POSSIBLE, SHES A REAL SWEET HEART!!!

Louise Axon
I have a staffie and she growls playfully when she's playing with her tag toy. I take her for a walk most days and i'm the one thats getting agressive not her! I'm agressive because of people's attitudes towards her. the way they look and treat her it's disgusting you would think they were the ones that had the violent reputation not the poor dog!

joanne king
they are the best dogs in the world brilliant with kids and very loyal

sarah doy
i have a staffie called diesel he is 6 months old and very loving to myself my husband and our 3 children . people need to look up things about a staffie before they judge them .

kaitlin rene
i have 1 staffie called charlie i have a daughter and he is very good with her, i think people are vey judgemental of staffies and i think if they learnt more about the breed there thoughts would be different

Anni SBT
i have two staffie's and when out on a walk yesterday a little yappy cross breed dog half the size of my staff decided it was going to attack her for no reason what so ever! My staff sat down put her head down and didn't even growl or snap as the horrible little thing persisted to bite her (luckily not hard enough to do any damage) when the owner dinally came to get the yappy thing she carried on as if nothing had happend (and was completely fine!!)SBT's are amazing dog's and very underated!! I have been attacked by 2 dog's on separate occasions and neither of them were staffie's one was a lab and the other was a collie! i don't blame another dog's of those breeds for the dog's that attacked me! They aren't all the same! SBT's should be given a chance to prove they're not the devil!!!!!

Vanessa Stafford
I have 1 staffie and 1 staffie X, they are both rescue dogs had them since they were pups. What amazing dogs they are, never a dull moment in our house with these two characters.

donna
Unpredictable maybe not so much with children and people, but not around unfamiliar dogs which makes them dangerous!!
I was bitten twice whilst trying to get off a staffy from my boxer that staffy would have turned on me big time had there not have been other people to help. My dog has been attacked 3 times by 3 different staffys, they were fighting dogs and should be understood by owners instaed of having them off the lead to attack when they like.
I had another encounter when a staffy came running over i asked the owner to put it on a lead as i dont trust them and the boxer that was attacked was fearful of them after 3 attacks and all she said was shut up hes fine. Although it didnt attack the body language was ready for a fight hackles were up and tail stuck straight in the air luckily this time it was with my youngest boxer and shes abit thick and thinks every dog is her friend had this have been my other bitch who would have shown unsureity that staffy would have attacked.
Owners need to look at the breed face facts and start to interpret the body language of their dog maybe then people and dogs wont get attacked for no reason. Im lucky this did not effect my dogs temperament just made her fearful of 1 breed rather than nasty but many have my friends have also had their pets attacked by staffys and it has turned their once placid dog into a nasty one with dogs!!
Staffys are nasty dogs, dont like the breed at all!!!

chris
Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a perfect family dog only let down by people and the press...all dogs will mis-behave if encouraged by the owners and any dog attack, any breed is 99.99% caused by the owner...a well fed, loved, walked, played with pet will respond with loving affection...Dogs that are kicked, chained, fed a poor quality diet, not taken to vet for check ups and not loved and cared for will become delinquent...the press report the odd incident when a dog bites someone...but the dog does not get a chance to explain that it has been abused by a cruel owner...Humans attack each other all the time...the press should be reporting how many attacks by dogs, how many by people and research how many of the dogs were not properly cared for... eg... dog attacks 2008 - 12rspca..rescued 1000s of dogs in 2008.Police prosecute 1000s for criminal behaviour etc. It is interesting that society accepts 1000s of muggings, rapes, murders as normal part of society behaviour..perhaps society does not realise that out of control children are not managed properly(we don't give them a lethal injection) and unfortunately dogs rely on people for everything! so the blame should never sit with the dog but with the owner... The dog is gift for any family, if the family spend time, effort and money... I recently waited at the checkout, the customer in front was buying sweets, alcohol, quality items and a bag of value dog meal...the point is! the family pet is less important than everyone else and is considered a cheaper member of the family.

suzanne hill,GLASGOW
i got a staffie just over a month ago at 6 wks old. She's 12 wks on Tuesday + getting her 2nd jag on Tuesday, her name is Kizzy + she is so adorable. I love her 2 pieces and she is brilliant with my 2 kids, family + friends. Kizzy is the most lovely loyal + loving dog. In the past i had an English Bull Terrier + she was so loving. Bull Terrier Dogs are such great dogs as long as their owners train them as good family dogs. I cant wait until Tuesday so she can get out + play + take her for long walks. Kizzy is all white with a very small touch of black on her left ear. Some people thought she looked like a dalmation but most people knew she had a staffie face + asked me if their was any more pups because they had Staffies in the past + no they are cracking dogs. I love her just like theres no tomorrow + i no she loves me all the same. She is my companion + best friend + couldn't imagine my life now without her in it. I could sit here for hours saying how great a dog she is, and how much she's changed my life around. I suffered from depression from time to time + i feel now my depression has gone. I cant wait until i get the privilage 2 take her for very long walks at my local park which is enormous. Well we're away just now but i will write something every week or 2 wks + let everybody know how Kizzy is developing into an adult dog + what she's like 4 the first time she goes out 4 walks, because at the moment she is fantastic doing the toilet on papers + when i told her 2 sit she was doing it at 6 wks old. So GOODBYE 4 now + you'll here from us soon. KIZZY.

dave LP, london.
i brought another staffie late last year, he is now 5 months old and he absolutely adores me and my family. he is my second staff as my last one died over ten years ago, i promised myself i wouldnt get another one as i didnt want it to ruin my memories of my first one but they are such brilliant dogs that eventually i gave in and got myself a lovely blue brindle staff (apparently the blue strain were from an irish fighting line but my dog shows no sign of aggression just love).Steve C, i appreciate your concerns as your dog was attacked by a staff and a mastiff however i would just like to comment on your narrowminded attitude towards staffs. when i was very young i was attacked by a bearded collie however i still love collie's and realised that this was just a one off, open your mind you seem to judge everything the same.

Naomi
I am always hearing of beatings that poor little staffies receive from their owners many of which result in death or serious injuries. It is no wonder that allot of staffies have been perceived as aggressive because unfortunately for them some of the nastiest people on earth own them. They try to protect themselves or one of their owners from the other and end up getting their life beaten out of them. I had a wrong perception before I fostered a staffie cross from a rescue and she is the softest most loving creature I have ever known and it upsets me that the majority of staffies are not given the care and love they deserve. I feel that no way near enough is being done to protect them from some of the dreadful people that are supposed to be their owners.

Kayleigh w
I have 3 stunning staffys, me and my 2 children aged 2 and 3 love them to bits they cuddle up to the dogs on the sofa and watch tv they would not hurt anyone and they dont deserve a bad reputation as they are so loving and loyal

nina webber
I have a staff her name is coco and she is the most loving dog she loves meeting people and new dogs she plays very well with my niece and nephew and they love her to. Its not the breed thats the problem its the owner that trains the dog to be horrible. I trust my life with my dog and know she would never hurt anyone. I find it difficult walking coco sometimes i live near a wood area so she runs round and plays but you get people in there who shout and scream put your dog on a lead she could hurt someone, i no for a fact my dog would never hurt anyone. So please stop giving staffs a bad name there arent all the same.

James Bichard
i recently adopted a staffordshire bull terrier named Bella, she lives up to her cute name by being the most loving dog, loves nothing more then to cuddle up in your lap and fall asleep. She's not dog aggressive at all and i completely trust her. Best decision me and my family ever made, we're a real family now, 2 adults, 4 kids, and the pooch.

julie
i had a staff he was so loving and gentle he was 9 when he fell ill i miss im so much i would have trusted my life and my children with him r.i.p buster staffs are so lovely and so gentle if you bring up a dog the way you should then they are a friend for life but if you let them get away with thing then they turn out like the yobs we have today running around with agressive staffs an pit bulls that give the other dogs bad reputations

nathan andrews
I have three staffordshire bull terriers, all from pups, the eldest is five years followed by three and our newest being 18 months. They are our life and we were aware of the commitment we had from the start. I don't know what we would do without them. They all have their own different personalities and get on like brothers! My five year old son adores them and they can be quite protective over him when on walks. I would like to add that i do get people crossing the street to avoid us and have even heard people mutter bad comments on the breed which is rather annoying. All dogs will react and behave depending on the way in which they are bought up and i would aggree that this breed has a bad reputation because of the idiots that home them based on their look. My dogs have a lovely temprement and i am proud of the breed in which we chose. I will always continue to home staffies.

cain
what do you do if they are nasty

emmmmmm
"the more aggressive fighting dog, the pit bull,"um excuse me, but how exactly is the apbt any more agressive then the staff.FACT both staffies and apbt are TERRIERS, and like other terriers are game, and have a high prey driveFACT both staffies and apbt were bred to fight other DOGS, and so have an inherent tendancy to be DA.FACT both staffies and apbt were bred to have a very low inherent HA, so they could be fought safley, As much as I’d hate to promote any virtue in the world of organised, professional dog fighting but if any of the people who wish to make these claims about ‘fighting breeds’ being more of a threat to people would like to investigate the world of the really bad, really serious, underground trained fighting dogs - they will discover that HA is just about the biggest sin a fighting dog can possess.this is a few quotes of the ukc staffie standered"Characteristics This breed has indomitable courage, high intelligence and tenacity. Coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its quietness and trustworthy stability make it an all-purpose dog.""Disqualifications Unilateral or bilateral cryptorchid. Viciousness or extreme shyness. Albinism. "and here are some quotes from the ukc apbt standered"CHARACTERISTICSThe essential characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier are strength, confidence, and zest for life. This breed is eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm. APBTs make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children. Because most APBTs exhibit some level of dog aggression and because of its powerful physique, the APBT requires an owner who will carefully socialize and obedience train the dog. The breed’s natural agility makes it one of the most capable canine climbers so good fencing is a must for this breed. The APBT is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers. Aggressive behavior toward humans is uncharacteristic of the breed and highly undesirable. This breed does very well in performance events because of its high level of intelligence and its willingness to work.""DISQUALIFICATIONS Unilateral or bilateral cryptorchid. Viciousness or extreme shyness. Unilateral or bilateral deafness. Long coat. Bobbed tail. Albinism. i have a staffie 3 years old she is great with everyone but recently my daughter was nearly atacked by a group of girls hanging around if it wasnt for the dog protecting her she could have been seriously hert. not every story is bad a staffy will protect its family with its own life. She is a very loyal dog and i wouldnt part with her for the world. She is extremely soft with kids and more so with toddelers. very obedient and we never need to shout at her just talking in a normal voice will do. oh and she tries to talk back sometimes. dont know why all my dogs tend to do that.

rob kane banbury
i have an 8 yr old staffy his name is seve.he is my life, icould not imagine life without him.i give him 5% love and he gives me 95%back,hes great with my grandchildren and great grandchildren, hes the best breed on the planet.i talk to proper staffy owners and they all say the same, god bless staffies rob

Torissa Hoffman
I own a staffie and just adore him. He trails right behind me from one room to another but then gives me his space by watching the door for me. He is supper loving, he loves to be right next to me when I am laying around. He is the best dog and most obedient one that I have ever had.

louise
I have a staffie, his name is Fanta i rescued him over a year ago from the Rspca, I'm not sure why these dogs a known as fighting dogs as much as people see them as my staffie gets on with children, other dogs and goes to dog training classes in which he is the class clown. A lot of people in the class all said to me how thet don't like staffie dogs but every one that has said it have grown to love Fanta and realise Staffies are not bad dogs. He enjoys plenty of loving from his mam and dad. i have a child on the way and i keep recieving comments like are you sure he will be ok with the baby and i have to gently remind these people its the owner that is responsible not the dog its just commen knowledge never to leave any dog in the same room as a baby when your not there.

hulky
people who have never own or come into contact with a staffy wil say, ohh there savage, there killas, but until uv own one, u wil never no. so dont judge something or someone you dont even no!!! staffys are the best

lisa
i have 2 staffies and they are so loving and get on together i also have 2 kids and they are so loving towards them i dont know why people judge them i think they shold not judge them till they have had one. they are only nasty if you trat them bad and if you bring them up in a loving enviroment they are so loving to humens.

MISS F OJOUNRU
PEOPLE ANOY ME AT TIMES REGARDS TO STAFFYS TOWARDS THE COMMENTS THEY MAKE AS A STAFFY OWNER MYSELFALLSO A STAFFY BREEDER OF 25 YEARS I FIND IT IS THE SMALL MINORITY OWNERS THAT GIVE THIS BREED ABAD NAME STAFFY ARE VERY CLEVER DOGS AND LOYAL DOGS AND IN MOST CASES VERY GOOD WITH CHILDREN

S.Parker
I own a sbt she's 2 years old.I am very disappointed in some of the comments on here!People are forgetting that any dog can attack not just sbt, it could easily be a Poodle,Labrador or in fact any breed. My own personal experiences with staffies are how loving, loyal and soft they are. It all about getting the training right and spending the time working with your dogs!

lizzie
my connie is 8 now,and what a joy she is,as daft as a brush, doesnt like the rain or cold, loves cuddles and walkes,id recomend this breed, but like any other dog has to be trained, she still is bouncey and playfull at times and doesnt know her own strength, she also nibbles at my hand wen we play but only mine never the children, friends of mine bought a staffie as thay had mine wen we went on our hols..once you have and love a staffie you will for life

daniel
staffs are not an aggresive dog, they are only aggresive if owners make them that way, i have a family of four boys and all teenagers and as teenagers they ruff house with him and he does not react violently, so people need to reminded that these dogs are not aggresive bu luvely family dogs

briano1
8 months ago i got 2 year old staffie from a friend my first time owing one he was under weight, he after turning out a lovely dog very loyle and very good with my kids, love,s his food and his walking, briano.

Recently i have brought and red and white staff. He is nearly 4 mounths old and is quite scared of most things when i take him on wals ( Due to the lack of walking form his previous owner ... i got him at 3mounths ) However when he is at home he dose try and bite you and nibbles at your hands, but when we say No it means No to himand he stops right away. I agree with !Nikki" your dog behaves they way you teach it .. Thanks For Your Time Read (:

gowler
my stafiies are quality i have a white one called spike and a black one called charlie.....spike groans alot i dont no why tho????

nikki
i have three staffies one of which is 9 weeks old and all three are great.its how you bring them up that matters!!!! You could train a Shih Tzu to be nasty its just that they dont look as if they could do damage but if they were trained im sure they could!!!! Lots of people see staffies as nasty dogs because youths hang around on street corners with them too!!! It's the owner that makes the dog what it is!!!

sylvia
i would'nt want any other breed than my two staffies, they're the most loyal, lovable, obedient, funny, and non aggresive babies i could ever want.I have two children which they love playing with, and they are so gentle. When my 10 year old boy prntends to cry thay just lick him all over. I love my staffies, i love the breed. please dont bad name the breed, it's the owners that need to be put down not the dog.

Barbara Dunne
I am now the proud owner of a SBT after spending a life time being afraid of them and their reputation, he is the sweetest loving loyal affectionate dog I could ever wish to have, he is also very determined in knowing what he wants and very clean in the house and he wont be our last that's for sure.

i have the most lovely staffie i love him so much he, has been attacked twice in his 2 short years and now because of this he growls at most dogs that bark or growl at him .the dogs that attacked him were off leads ,one came out of a garden got hisback leg and nearly killed him ,i wanted to kill this dog and prosecuted the owner as in defence my very responsible 14year old son tried very hard to get the other much larger dog off ours.i am very wary of other dogs now and will run away with mine, it has got to the pointi dred walkies, a thing i used to love.it is the owners not the dogsfault

I really do appreciate that there are an awful lot of well behaved, loving, playful Staffies out there, giving enormous pleasure to their owners. The obvious comment is that it's not the dog's fault, it's the owner's. Of course, there's a lot of truth in that, but you could say the same thing about guns. It's not guns that kill people, it's the people that pull the trigger. However, if guns are widely available, it's amazing how many more shooting incidents there are. Coming home from taking a late night walk the other night, my Collie cross, who was on a lead, was attacked by a Staffie and what I think was a Bullmastiff. No owner in sight. The Staffie launched itself and clamped on to the rear of my dog, whilst the other one kept dashing in for a quick bite. No amount of punching or kicking would force this dog to let go. I eventually had to choke the Staffie, whilst kicking out at the attacking Bullmastiff, until it finally released its grip. The attack was vicious, totally unprovoked and extremely frightening. I am convinced that if I hadn't have been relatively strong, my dog would have been killed and I would have been badly hurt. No amount of stories telling me how loving and cute their Staffies are will change the way I now feel about them. I know that many owners are to blame for their dog's behaviour, but at the end of the day, in the wrong hands, they are killing machines and as such, they should not be allowed off their leads in public, ever. Certain dogs should require a licence and licences should only be given to responsible owners who can prove that they will train and look after the dogs properly. I know that this won't stop the illicit trade in Bull Terriers, or the stealing of dogs. However, if the authorities took the same view as they are doing towards carrying a knife, then the streets would be a safer place. As far as I'm concerned, a breed like a Staffie in the wrong hands is just as dangerous, if not more so, than someone carrying a knife. I'm sure that there will be thousands of responsible Staffie owners saying that they are being tarred with the same brush and they are being persecuted for the irresponsible actions of a few. However, the 'few' appear to be growing in number at an alarming rate and you only have to type in 'Bull Terrier Attack' into Google to see the number of attacks that are occurring on a more and more regular basis. Unless the authorities deal with this strongly and quickly, it is a situation that will rapidly get completely out of control.

I have a staffie, she is almost nine months old. I can't remember the days without her and honestly wouldn't want to. They will give you 100% commitment. All a responsible owner has to do is set the ground rules from the very first day they are with you. This doesn't mean training them by showing a dog aggression. More over rewarding good behaviour and not bad.I was walking my little girl along the promenade at Littlehampton over the weekend, several dogs came up and said hello. One even stood there and growled at her, then barked and became aggressive. What did she do....... No not fight back as most critics would no doubt suggest. She simply adopted a submissive stance and moved away. She then waited for her Mum (me) to take her away from the situation. I trust her implicitly and would never question her reliability.I believe when you start putting a muzzle on a dog you are immediately facing a situation where the dog feels threatened. They know that they are more at risk and can't defend themselves. Which can then leave you with an animal that becomes aggressive due to fear, regardless of breed.I work in a pub and my partner regularly brings my dog in to see me. Customers get very excited about coming up and admiring her, which she laps up as it means lots of tummy tickles. Other dogs are more playmates. I would defy anyone to spend an hour with my girl and not have their bad impressions of Staffies swayed.........

I have a staff she is 8months and she is so nice. She would not hurt a fly, I think it is unfair how people read all the bad view in the paper and look at all satffs and label them as bad......

I have recently temporarily adopted a SBT she was around 16 months when she came to me. I have 2 labs one 11 and the other 6 but who has a spinal tumour diagnosed 3 years ago but with chemo she keeps steady and is happy. The only problems I have had with the staffie is her toilet training, she still has accidents in the house but is getting better. We had two incidents of aggression towards my younger lab but a "very firm" smack on her botttom and a "good telling off" seems to have demonstrated where she stands and what the rules are. She would not have been my dog of choice but being sort of forced to crae for her I am finding her to be obedient, learns fast, inquisitive and affectionate. She has been great with visiting children. She clearly misses me when I am out at work and gets so excited when I come home. She has the funniest little sqeaky cry and really tries to please. She is gentle and I believe with the correct owner she would continue to behave in this manner.

Staffies are the best breed of dog around, adorable, loveable, cute, loving, gentle, funny, my kids best friend is a staffie, my best friend is a staffie,If you never owned a staffie you dont know what your missing out on, that's your problem,

You cant blame the dog its the owners that make them like that. If you read through all of the posts notice every dog that attacked had a negliant owner. If i had a gun and shot some body then i will go to jail the same should happen with owners that train staffies to attack i have 3 and none of them show aggression with just a little bit of socialisation and some clear growned rules they are the most loving dogs please dont blame the dog blame the owners that make them like this.

A relatives husband from up north used to breed Crufts standard SBT`s. He couldn`t care less when it killed some poor person`s pet- don`t know if it was a cat or small dog that was killed. I have a yorkiex terrier and panic when she is ran at by the odd loose bull terrier- so far i have managed to run and pick her up before they reach her. I am really alert when walking my dog and will not give a bull terrier type the benefit of the doubt.

Today a Staffie ran 100 metres flat out to attack my collie/lab cross who was on a lead. He visciously savaged the front of my dogs chest and he is now currently recovering after surgery. No I don't think Stafford Bull Terriers should be a breed allowed in this country. Even if they can be affectionate for 90% of the time but the terror and damage they can do is way beyond other breeds of dog. I'm sure that many Staffie owners will say their dog is wonderful with kids etc. Why is it nearly always a staffie involved. Media ....no ! This attack today has left both my girlfriend and i traumatised not to mention the dog. There should be mandatory muzzling of them when off the lead.

Julie
We have an 18 month Staffie called Reg and we have had to endure comments and people veering away from us as they assume the worst.Reggie is the daftest and softest dog which our 11 month old grandson will attest to and we would not part with him for the world.

I have just got 2 staffys 6 weeks ago and they are the most gorgeous dogs eva!they r brindle with white markings. Staffys only have a bad name because of some of the careless owners today not bringing them up in the right way.

I live in Surrey and have own a staff for 5 years. My family have had staffs for years too. I've also owned other breeds. This is why I really like the staffie breed it's a bit of everything. Some people think that it's a ugly, commoners dog that's aggressive. This is all very untrue. Once you get past all the rubbish talked about these dogs you'll find a very loyal, caring, smart, happy, clever animal. My girlfriend is scared of dogs but loves this staffie because he is so gentle with her. She still thinks he's ugly (don't tell him). Even my mother who is getting on now (ha ha) walks, looks after him when I go away, etc and he's fine. However one word of warning these dogs need a responsible, respectful owner, They are powerful animals, use your common sense. If the breed is to get a better press the owners will have to put the work in too!

I understand that Staffodshire Bull Terriers are a loving loyal breed but the one that attacked my dog today was the devil herself. It came over as if it wanted to say hello but when it got to about 4 feet it changed completely. It's hackles came up and its teeth came out as it lunged for my Bulldog. I screamed and it ran away but the owner just laughed and told it to try again. It came for a second attack and unfortunately screaming did not do the job this time and I had to kick her away but I was terrified. My dog was on a lead and would not have stood a chance against a loose dog with a crappy owner. I have reported the incident to the police but I am scared to death now and will never look at them the same again. I think they should be registered under the dangerous dogs act and be made to wear muzzels at all times as they can do so much damage if they lock onto another dog. Apologies to all the responsible Staffy owners out there of which I am sure there are many but my dogs are my babies and that Staffy today wanted to do them serious harm.

i am sick and tired of the press over staffs ihave an engels and an american staff both bitches and dogs (staffs) before, my mother now has an american staff because of how she felt over mine over the years all dogs have the potential to be bad but mine would rather kiss you, it is the peiple who have dogs that are the problem not the dogs themselves

Woolwich massive
i have a staff and she is the best family dog anyone could ask for. I hate to see when people try and use staffs for fighting or any form of violence because dogs have feelings too if you train your dog to be aggressive it will carry on doing that just to please you. Dont blame the dog blame the owner. My dog is loving & loyal she is far from voilent. To all those people who have anything bad to say about staffs you need to get your facts stright be around a proper disaplined staff for a day and im guaranteed you will want to take him/her home.im for staffs i love them all to bits.

My Mum and step Dad have a staffie called Alfie (a more fitting name would perhaps be smiler) he is such a loving dog + extremely friendly to adults and children of any age (they have 11 grandchildren between them from 1-17yrs) all of which love Alfie to bits. I also have a boxer who is just as friendly and loves visiting his mate (alfie the staffie)boxers also get bad press on occassion and this is not fair i believe it's the owners that usually create the nasty aggressive dogs not the breed its self staffie, boxer or othergive these lovely dogs a break and if u can adopt one from your local dogs home!

I love my staffie. Here in the states there is reallly no difference between a pit and a staffie so it is hard to confince people that my dog is not dangerous but she not. she is a biggy teddy bear. Although when she feels her family is threatened she has shown agression she always listens to me right away when i tell her no. even when i was wrestled to the ground i said no and she did not attack although her mom kazzie did not listen on that one cause she was on the guy before i could say no. But the best part was kazzi did not hurt him she pinned him and held him and that was it she stopped right there.

staffies are the best dogs and are very good guard dogs so no1 can break in to your house

I Have Grown Up With Staffies Since I Was Born. I Don't See The Problem..? At The Moment I Have A 8 Year Old Staffie That I Have Had Since I Was 5. His Name Is Dylan And I Absolutely Love Him To Bits! I've Had Him Since Birth So I Know Him Well. Around My Area Not Many People Like Dylan Because Of The Reputation Irresponsible Owners Have Gave Them. My Dog Has Almost Been Taken From Me As Once He Escaped From My Lead And Ran Of To The Field Round The Corner, When I Got Round I Could See A Neighbour And Her Dog.. I Thought "Oh No!" Her Dog Actually Bit My Dog And Attacked Dylan.. I Was Red With Anger When She Said It Was The Opposite Way Around. Needless To Say, I No Longer Speak With My Neighbour.. I Trust Dylan 100% Before I Trust Anyone Else. He Is A Gentle Kind Hearted Dog Who Only Wants To Be Petted. You Don't Get Bad Dogs..And If There Is,Its Bad Owners That Made Them Like That! And Yes, My Staffie NEVER Stops Grinning!Sarah 13

iv got a ginger staffie called thunder he is 2 and he is my pride and joy, he follows me around all day, and all he wants to do is play with his football! he does not go to bite other dogs he gets on with them no matter of the breed.people often see thunder and think that he looks as if he will attack them until i tell them to stroke him, and then his tale waggels and he gets all excited! me personally i think its the way you bring your staffie up.i used 2 be scared of staffies untill we got one and iv changed my view totaly on them, they are so loveable and always want to play x

chris
staffies are the best dogs ever :) i have one she called bella

Staffybullterriers.com is a fab website, which I am a member of. The members are all staffie owners from all over the world and their persoanl experiences and expertise are fantastic. It is an open forum with many topices such as feeding, training, behaviour, general discussions etc.. and you can lurk in the sahdows and read other posts or ask questions yourself and have a chat with like minded people who love staffies. For anyone with a staffy I would recommend this site (I have not met anyone on there from staffordshire yet, so new local members would be great for me!)

I am the proude owner of 2 staffies (bitch 11 months old and dog 7 weeks old), I have previously owned other breeds and I can honestly say that now I have had a staffy I will never have any other dog ever again. They are loyal, easy to train, very intelligent, loving, affectionate, obident and very playful, they make me smile everyday, and as my husband works nights sometimes, they are also fantastic company. It makes me sad to read stories of `devil dogs` and see young irresponsible owners walking the streets with them to try and boost their own image and make them look big and hard, when in actual fact if they knew anything about the breed and trated the dog as a true pet and companion (instead of a fighting machine) they would know that the dog would much rather be lying on the sofa or in front of the fire having his belly tickled. It is about time the staffy got some good press and a few local staffy awareness events would be perfect to re-home strays and rescue dogs and also to re-educate people about the breed. There are many clubs and events around the country, I think it would be fantastic if we could have a local club / group / society for the wonderful Staffordshire Bull Terrier (and their owners), after all.....we are in Staffordshire

I own two staffies and they are just great dogs, they adore my children and my children adore them. IT is bad owners that give staffies a bad name.

HELLO, I AM THE PROUD OWNER OF 2 STAFFIES ( ONE BOY AGED 6 AND ONE GIRL AGED 5). I LOVE THESE DOGS AS IF THEY WERE MY CHILDREN ( HAVE ONE SON 14 WHO HAS SPECIAL NEEDS AND ONE AGED 18). I WOULD TRUST MY STAFFS 100%. THEY ARE LOVING LOYAL AND MY TWO ANGELS. THE ONLY TIME THEY GET NERVOUS IS WHEN OTHER DOGS ATTACK THEM ON WALKS . THEY HAVE BEEN ATTACKED BY MAINLY LABS AND ONCE MY LITTLE GIRL STAFF WAS ATTACKED BY A GUIDE DOG IN TRAINING SO NOW IS VERY NERVOUS OF LABS. MY YOUNGEST CHILD HAS MANY MANY SPECIAL NEEDS AND THESE DOGS /CHILDREN UNDERSTAND HIS NEEDS HELP WITH HIS MOBITLITY AND ARE SO CARING AND THOUGHTFUL THEY ARE FRIENDLY ( SOMETIMES TOO MUCH IE LICKING ETC) AND ARE WONDERFUL DOGS. ITS NOT THE BREED THAT IS BAD ITS THE WAY THEY ARE BROUGHT UP LOVE VICKI BRUCE ( 6 YR OLD STAFF AND JUDE 5 YEAR OLD STAFF) XXXXXX

i think stffies are beatifull it isnt the fault if there are nasty it is because the owner has brought it up to be that way if owners now stop learning them to fight people and other dogs they wont be band because they are beautifull dogs and i am sure any one would like a dog for a family even if you dont learn it to protect you because you love it it will show its love by protecting you they are ther for love not for fighting and being nasty xxx

Y.Harvey
l have a staffie who so loving its no the dog it the people who have them that gives them a bad name

Vicky
I think Staffies are lovely dogs, they always look like they've got a smile on thier face! I may have one some day.

JT
As a responsible owner of two staffies I cringe when another story of 'demon dog attacks' come to light in the news especially when a staffie is involved. All dogs can be aggressive however it is the owners who have allowed their dogs to be this way. My two are the most loving and loyal dogs I have ever owned and the are adored by my two sons who have grown up in a house hold which respects animals and their behaviours.... I can only say that in my own mind I would have no other breed of dog; loving, excitable, playful, boisterous, wants to please, welcomes you home and I mean really welcomes you.....these traits are the ones I know of the staffie. For the people who have never had a staff please keep an open mind to their wonderful personality!!!...

I adore Staffies. I am a Cheshire girl who moved here aged 18, 30 years ago. I had never seen one before and was immediately smitten. I have had three in the past and own two Staffie cross rescue dogs now. I am commited to rescuing the breed and have homed one for the Animal Samaritans and sponsored several at Rochdale Rescue to save them from being put down. Please look at yheir site. Anything I can do to help-count me in. My dogs and myself are great PR for the breed and I am appauled at the misrepresentation of them in the media.
