Keith Charles

Review: Keith Charles

Mike Elliott
Keith Charles, the "psychic cop", was at the Playhouse in Weston on 19 July 2006. BBC Somerset reviewer Mike Elliott went along to see the enthralling and thought-provoking show.

An audience of hundreds of mixed believers and sceptics turned out on a sweltering evening to watch this fascinating show.

They were easy to differentiate, as the audience comprised 85 percent females. Clearly, they were the converted.

The show was quite enthralling throughout and certainly thought provoking, as Keith worked his audience in a relaxed, assured manner.

I am not certain that this show would have converted any of the doubters, whilst I have difficulty in accepting Mr Charles' assertion that all the dead go to heaven, and there is no hell.

Oh dear! Does that mean I shall have to face up to solicitors in the afterlife as well as this one?

Keith is clearly sincere in his beliefs, many of which have been founded on personal tragedies.

In his life, he has had to contend with two marriages, the death of a son and a granddaughter, a stroke which has impaired his vision, as well as a heart attack. Despite all this he still cuts a dashing figure and clearly enjoys life.

He is regarded as Britain's leading medium and is also known as the "psychic cop". Using his paranormal powers he has helped the police forces at Scotland Yard and in Canada solve murder mysteries and locate missing bodies.

Despite his unusual powers, I still had the niggling feeling that the show didn't quite "do what it said on the tin".

I could not see the purpose of the table with the velvet tablecloth and the stool that were on stage throughout, but remained totally unused. Also, I felt that much of his chatter was needlessly repetitive.

His eye for detail and the minutiae of everyday life is quite extraordinary.

This was particularly shown up when one male member of the audience strongly asserted that he didn't know anyone who had committed suicide, although Keith insisted that he did. The truth came out when the man's wife reminded him that one of his cousins had taken their own life at a fairly young age.

Moments like this cause one to reflect that perhaps, after all, there is a lot to be said for mediumship, clairvoyance, spiritualism and the supernatural.

Certainly, I was not deterred, and would gladly attend another of Keith Charles shows, with a completely open mind.

I saw him at the Octagon, Yeovil. I thought he was amazing as he worked on very little information. Brilliant, will see him again.
