UN demand war crime probes

A pro-government newspaper in Sri Lanka has published what it says is a leaked summary of a United Nations report into crimes
allegedly committed during the civil war against Tamil Tiger guerrillas.
It quotes the report as saying there are credible allegations of possible human rights violations by the Sri Lankan government in the final stages of the conflict. These include the killing of civilians through widespread shelling, attacks on hospitals and violations of the rights of civilians. Denial The Sri Lankan government denies wrongdoing and opposed the setting up of the UN investigation. The panel has alleged that the LTTE had held civilians as human buffer, and killed civilians who attempted to flee LTTE controlled
area. The UN panel which has concluded that the government’s notion of accountability is not in accordance with international standards says the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) is deeply flawed. Saying it did not meet international standards, the panel has demanded the Sri Lankan government to launch genuine investigations
into war crime allegations. |
