Former president Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s security chief Nihal Karunaratna pleaded guilty to threatening
police officers.
Chargers were framed against Karunaratna for threatening a group of police officer’s who went to arrest a suspect allegedly
associated with under world gangs in 2000.
The suspect Baddegana Sangeewa was previously attached to the presidential security division and was later killed at a shoot
out blamed on a rival gang.
Once the accused pleaded guilty the counsel from the attorney general’s department pointed out that interference of a senior
officer in carrying out legitimate duties of the Police is matter of serious concern and that the court could sentence him
for a period of up to two years and in addition impose a fine.
Sentencing was postponed
