Thirty seven Sri Lankans evacuated to Greece from Libya will be flown to Sri Lanka within the next couple of days said the
Minister of Foreign Employment, Promotion and Welfare, Dilan Perera.
The Government is in the process of arranging a charter flight to bring back another 418 Sri Lankans stranded in Libya, the Ministry of External Affairs Foreign Ministry said. They are at present accommodated in the Sri Lankan Embassy, in Tripoli, and plans are underway to evacuate them as soon as
possible, said Minister Dilan Perera. He said External Affairs Ministry is in contact with the Indian Foreign Ministry to see the possibility of evacuting Sri lankans by their ships, he said. In addition, the external Affairs Ministry said that Sri Lanka also intends to send a passenger ship to evacuate the stranded Sri Lankan workers in Libya, Morocco and Egypt as the situation in these countries is worsening. This passenger ship would reach Malta which is the closest Port to Libya to facilitate the evacuation of stranded Sri Lankans, it said. The Ministry of External Affairs said that Government’s attempt to seek assistance from the IOM to get stranded Sri Lankans
released failed as the organization has already left Libya due to prevailing situation. |
