UNP General Secretary, Tissa Attanayaka speaking to media said that they learnt the government through its agents were trying to get an enjoining order from courts.

“We were prepared for this and able to prevent such a move. We kept our lawyers alert,” Attanayaka said.

The Colombo District court on Friday refused to issue an enjoining order preventing the UNP from holding the annual convention on December 12.

“The court’s ruling has paved the way for the party to bring about amendments to the constitution and ruled the convention was legal,” Attanayaka added.

Asked what evidence UNP has to accuse the government, General Secretary Attanayaka said that the party leader, central committee and parliamentary group, all have unanimously agreed to the decision to party constitutional reforms . Therefore, no one in the party has different views, he said.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said that only authorized members could participate in the UNP convention.

There will be strict checks and no one would be admitted without invitiation, party’s president, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera said.
