Resettlement continues says Govt

The government says that it is continuing the process of resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
A spokesman from the competent authority’s office for resettlement said that on Friday more than one thousand IDPs living in the Manik Farm Camp were taken to Mullaitive for resettlement . He further elaborated saying that IDPs will be taken to Killinoachhi and Oddussudan for resettlement within the next week. The spokesman said that although the government had announced that by the end of January all the IDPs living in Manik Fram Camp would be resettled this has not been possible due to the delay in clearing landmines. He said that as landmines clearing in the Killinochchi and Mulaithive districts are underway the rest of the IDPs would be resettled soon. Speaking to reporter Dinasena Rathugamage the spokesman said that the IDPs are happy once they have come to know that they will be resettled soon. More than three hundred thousand people were displaced due to the conflict between the Tamil Tigers and the Government troops. Most of the displaced were camped at the Manik Farm Centre in Vauniya. |
