Notice issued to DNA leaders

Anoma Fonseka
Anoma Fonseka and other DNA leaders are ordered to report to police
A court in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, has issued notice to the leaders of an opposition political party to immediately report to the police on charges of breaking the election law.

The leaders of Democratic National Alliance (DNA), led by former military commander Gen Sarath Fonseka, are accused by the police of staging a political rally at a time political campaigns were illegal.

Police in a report to the Colombo magistrate said the DNA leaders have organised a campaign rally, seeking the release of detained Gen Fonseka, in front of Colombo Fort railway station on 06 April.

Police said the rally was illegal as campaigns were to be stopped 48 hours before the 08 April general election, according to the election law.

The court was requested to order DNA leaders, including Gen Fonseka’s wife Anoma, to appear before the police to record statements.

Mrs. Fonseka, parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, Sunil Handunnetti, and Arjuna Ranathunga were issued notice by the court.

Gen Fonseka is facing two courts martial on charges of being engaged in politics while in uniform and corruption in procurements.
