US urges Sri Lanka reconciliation

A senior American diplomat has warned that Sri Lanka's failure to share power with minority Tamils after the end of the war
could lead to renewed violence in the country.
The US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Robert Blake told the AP news agency that Sri Lanka should allow more freedom of movement for the nearly 300,000 Tamils displaced by the war and confined to government-run camps in the north. He said they were being held against their will. The Sri Lankan authorities say they do plan to let civilians return home, but must screen them first to identify rebel fighters. The American official said Washington will not put conditions for humanitarian aid but longer term reconstruction assistance to Sri Lanka depends on the progress in resettling displaced people and in power sharing efforts. |
