UPFA sweeps WPC polls

Sri Lanka’s ruling alliance has secured a sweeping victory in the Western Provincial Council (WPC) elections held on Saturday.
Ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has secured 68 seats out of 102 WPC. The public has clearly endorsed the policies of President Mahinda Rajapaksa administration, information minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa has said. “They clearly responded to the call of the President for a united Sri Lanka and the electorate was highly inspired. The President believed in himself in wiping out terrorism, and the people also believed in him,” the minister was quoted in the information department official website. The main opposition, United National Party (UNP), has only won 30 seats. While opposition Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has won three seats; one from each district, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has secured two seats. The Democratic Unity Alliance has won one seat in the WPC. More that 3.8 million voters were eligible to vote and over 60 percent have casted their vote, according to official figures. |
