Extradite LTTE chief - Congress

LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran
Velupillai Prabhakaran is wanted by India for the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi
India's ruling Congress party has urged Sri Lanka to hand over the Tamil rebel leader if he is caught alive in the current military offensive in the north of the island.

The party's chief spokesman, Veerappa Moily, said the rebel leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, should extradited to face trial in India for his alleged involvement in the assassination of the former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.

His comments came amid reports that Sri Lankan troops have been continuing their offensive a day after capturing the rebels' administrative headquarters in the town of Kilinochchi.

India outlawed the Tamil Tigers after the assassination of the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, allegedly by a woman suicide bomber from the Tigers.
