Vavuniya train services resumed

A ceremony was held in the nothern Sri Lankan town of Vavuniya to mark the resumption of train services which were halted
for nearly ten months.
Until Tuesday, Yal Devi train from Colombo stopped at Medawachchiya, Anuradhapura. Passengers were seen queing in Vavuniya railway station on Tuesday for the return journey, as the first train for ten months arrived from Colombo. General Manager, Railways, Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan told journalist Dinasena Ratugamage that night train services are also to be resumed subject to approval by security authorities. Two trains a day linking Vavuniya and Colombo to be continued from Tuesday, Sri Lanka Information Department website said. The services were suspended in February due to the "due to the threat of terrorist attack," it said. "The resumption is another indicator of the success of the humanitarian mission of the security forces to rid the Wanni of terrorists". |
