President Mahinda Rajapaksha told the international community that his government is determined not to allow LTTE to hold
, a part of the Tamil community, hostage to terror in northern Sri Lanka.
Addressing the 63rd UN General Assembly Sessions in New York on Wednesday President Rajapaksha said that the government has declared its policy of engaging in dialogue and discussion with the democratic leadership of the Tamil community. Speaking on the situation of the East the president said that former terrorists are now functioning as democratically elected Provincial Councillors and a former child soldier conscripted by the LTTE is now the elected Chief Minister. Disarm for talks “Our Government would only be ready to talk to this illegal armed group when it is ready to commit itself to decommissioning of its illicit weapons and dismantling of its military capability, and return to the democratic fold “said President Mahinda Rajapaksha He further added that despite the LTTE seizing a good proportion of humanitarian supplies the government is continuing with relief supplies to the affected civilians. “Government also purchases the paddy and other foodstuffs produced in those areas” said President Mahinda Rajapaksha. |
